Dear Lily,

I will be coming to Jaipur for a couple of months starting april and I was wondering what life out there was like. I don't know anything about India, let alone Jaipur! Are there books you can recommend, serious do's and don'ts? Do they have stuff like Starbucks and the likes or is it as yet "unspoiled" by globalisation?

Question Jaipur train travel to Delhi

Hi,

Could someone please recommend a good train to go from Jaipur to Delhi preferably late-morning/early afternoon. I'm flying out of Delhi late that night, so would also ask if New Delhi is preferable to arriving by train into Delhi Cantt. There are several trains, but are they all similar so long as your in 1 or 2AC?

Many thanks,
erin

Question Travel from Jaipur to Udaipur

Hi Lily,
A friend and I are staying with you in early March. After that, we travel to Udaipur. We're thinking of stopping in Chittaugarh on the way down, then spending the night at Castle Bijaipur. We'd leave early the next morning for Udaipur.
I'm trying to gauge how long the trip will take and what the road is like between Udaipur and Jaipur via Chittaugarh to determine if this is a reasonable plan or better just to continue on down to Udaipur.
Any advice you have would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks,
Kristin

elcsas - Look into the Shatabdi Express to Jaipur. It starts in the morning from the New Delhi train station. Don't know about Delhi Cantt stop or train # etc. For very late night / early morning, I'd think New Delhi station isn't much farther. Anyway, I thought Shatabdi was a very nice way to travel to Jaipur.

Kristin - Really recommend Chittorgarh. It was the highlight of our visit to Rajasthan a few years back, comprising of Jaipur, Udaipur and a day trip to Chittorgarh thrown in as an afterthought. We traveled by bus - and road was very good. If my memory serves me right - the travel time between Udaipur and Chittorgarh was of the order of 2 to 2.5 hours.

Namita - Try http://jasvilas.com ! We stayed that a few years back and enjoyed it.

Jaipur during Holi(March 03rd)

My wife and I will be in Jaipur over the Holi festival, and though I've been soaked with water in Thailand during the Songkran festival, I am a bit concerned about the throwing of paint bit( we both wear glases).
Will most tourist spots be closed in Jaipur during this festival, and if so where would be the safest(least paintballed) place to watch the festival.
Many thanks to all who would reply

Holi in Jaipur 2007 and elephants

Echo the question about places of "varying intensity" to check out Holi.

Also, when will the events of the elephant festival fall this year? And where are they located?

Thanks much for the time and thoughtfulness.

Holi Festival

This year the Elephant Festival is on the 3rd of March. For those not used to seeing elephants, it is a fascinatig sight to see them marching on the roads and even playing polo!

Holi is traditionally a boisterous festival and we usually advise guests to stay indoors till lunchtime - and to be careful even after that! However if you do not explore the roads of Jaipur on this day, but stay indoors you may still see some mild action in your hotel.

If you have any kind of allergies, my suggestion would be - do not play Holi

Plenty of good restaurants in Jaipur, avoid Choki Dhani it sucks.

Sanganer

Is about 16 kilometres south of Jaipur, and is in fact the airport of Jaipur. A tiny village, it is famous as the most important centre of hand made paper in the country. Visiting one of these factories is an experience! Also well known for its block printing.

Chokhi Dhani

Not far from Sanganer. It is a hotel and restaurant complex. The restaurant attracts tourists, both foreign and domestic, who wan to experience the ambience of Rajasthan. Live performances in the evening but the food, though good, can be a bit on the spicy side for the uninitiated.

Apno Gaon

Similar to Chokhi Dhani on the other side of the town! Slightly less expensive but a good place to enjoy a camel ride if you do not want to travel all the way to Chokhi Dhani.
