We spent 3 nights in both Udaipur and Jaipur during our recent travels and found plenty to do. In both cases we arrived in the afternoon so we had two whole days to explore before further travels. I found I needed this as a minimum after a week of travelling - just to keep sane and to have the time to really 'experience' a place, rather than just pass through.
Udaipur has the beautiful lake and huge City Palace, while Jaipur is a bustling city with Amber Fort, Umaid Bhawan palace etc... For me, if I had to chose, I'd stay 3 nights in Udaipur and 2 in Jaipur - but then I was really taken by the view of the lake at Udaipur |

Udaipur...hands down.
Jaipur is an extremely crowded place with 3-4 million people. Stay overnight, then leave. Udaipur is aesthetically beautiful . We stayed at the Amet palace on the lake (reasonably priced) and ate at their restaurant, the Ambrai, right on the water. Great food and ambiance. We splurged for a milestone anniversary one night at the Lake Palace Hotel out in the middle of the water. So decadent and so much fun!. If I went to Rajasthan again I'd only visit 2 places, Jaisalmer and Udaipur. If you take your Mrs. to the Lake Palace, xirokx, I guarantee you she'll put a smile on your face before the sun comes up. Trust me on this one....JR.

I have to advise both since I can't decide between them either. They are 2 entirely different cities but each is unforgettable in it's own way.

Udaipur is a lovely place to spend your time now that there is water on the lakes. It is so romantic. I like it more than Jaipur.

Jaipur or Udaipur
I didn't find a lot to do in Jaipur - mind you it was great for shopping! Udaipur was beautiful and very relaxing, laid back place. I stayed 3 nights at Mahendra Prakash Hotel on Lake Palace Road back in 2001 (cost Rs350 in May/June). Fantastic place, lovely big rooms, nice indoor courtyard for eating and a lovely swimming pool at the back - considering the temp was 45+ degrees this was heaven.

Excellent!!! Thank you very much......
Arrived in Jaipur 8pm last night its cold here - I know its winter but its still cold. Took us around 2 and a half hours to warm up our royal suite. We are staying at the shahpura house very nice indeed. This morning we intend to go sightseeing followed by shopping (cant wait) tonight I will have a full body massage for 700rs then tomorrow morning we will hit Udaipur... So far how holiday is great thanks to all you wonderful people and namaste tours. I love driving through the countryside its breathtaking, beautiful and feels like I am at home here. The scenery is out of this world. I love india!!!! Thanks for all your help |

Have lunch at the Niros in Jaipur.
While in Udaipur dont miss the buffet lunch/dinner at the palace hotel. Visit Ranakpur for the fantastic marble carvings at the Jain temple. See if you can visit Kumbhalgarh. Good luck & enjoy your trip. |
