How to go to Amber from Jaipur?

Hi,

I will be 2 days in Jaipur. Can you recommend me the best itinerary?
The first days, I going to go to Pink City, all Palaces, etc. Next day I am going to Amber. Do I need to hire a taxi, or how to do it best of all?
What price can it be?

Leo

hi stifftung,
In my opinion 2 days in Jaipur are enough to visit the town and, obvously, Amber Fort. You can choose the opion you prefer, but I would go to the fort in the early morning or at sunset time (check the opening time and consider 5 hours are more than enough to visit the fort). In order to get there, there are different buses leaving from the square near the Palace of Wind that will take you there in 30 minute (+ or -). Do not remember exactly the price of the bus, but it is very cheap (maybe 8 rs). You can even go there by tuk tuk or taxi (if you choose this option ask the driver to go there by the road of the old town) but it will be more expensive.
have a good time,
max

Amber Fort is just 11 km from the city. Many tourists like to ride up to the fort on an elephant! From the Gate of Victory - Jai Pol. Palace timings: Open 9 a.m - 16.30 pm

Are the Elephants doing this again?

I remember them being stopped after one of the owners were killed, but can't remember reading if they were allowed to start again.

It was one of my dreams to go to Amber and ride an Elephant, it ended up being a big disapointment, it somehow just never felt right putting money into the hands of the people who (in my opinion) treat the Elephants so poorly.

Yes, they are still doing it! At least it was like that in november. The price of the ride is now very high (do not remember but I think around 500 rs for 10 minutes ride) and they say it is because of the new rules against the exploitation of the animals: nowadays they assure you that one elephant is not allowed to do more than 2 rides a days, that's why it is bacame so expensive.
Is it true? I really do not Know...

We took the bus from the palace of the winds for Rs6 pp taking us to the stairs up to the Amber fort in just half an hour or so.
We felt greatly sorry for the elephants and disrecommend people to take them so to discourage supply.

We walked around for the whole day, from the Amber fort up to the Tiger fort to wrap up the day with a sundown beer. If you have a good physical condition and do not suffer vertigo you can easily walk down from there in half an hour straight into town..

It was a similar price about 4 years ago, they were ready with their well rehearsed reasons at that time too.

2 times a day.....there is too much money to be made, I'd be surprised if they done the trip less than 10 times a day.

Thank you all.
And still what should I do?
I will live around Railway Station. My budget will allow me to spend lets say 500 rupees.
Will I need to take a taxi to the point from which the elephants go to Amber? Will i need to pre-book the elephant ride? Or how should all the logistics go?
(If I ask in my hotel, they will offer me a tour for 5 times the price. That is why I would prefer to choose organize all the logistics, taxi, etc. by myself).

Please reread my posting.

Rickshaw from railway station to palace of the winds : Rs50. Bus (leaving every 5 minutes or so) from there to amber fort: Rs6 pp.. Leaving you plenty of money!

Please, please, do NOT take an elephant ride.. <a> it is only a very short walk so it is dull to take the ride (and way to expensive) <b> you support animal abuse ..

I was paying Rs150 for an auto rickshaw from near the train station to the Amber Fort.
Elephant rides at the Amber Fort are Rs550 per person with part of the money going to an elephant help fund..
Only 2 tourist are allowed on an elephant for the ride up, and no tourist are allowed to ride back down.
The elephants only do 4 trips a day with a mandatory 30 min (which is usually much longer) rest in-between each trip.
The best time is around 9am when there are dozens of elephant going up and down to the fort and if you don’t want to ride, walking along with them is a real thrill!

Male elephants are not allowed to give rides at the Amber Fort and the government pays the owners of male elephants Rs300 a day to keep them at home.

If you don’t support them, they don’t make money and it’s the elephants that suffer!

I spent 7 days this last month living with these people and learned a lot about them and their elephants. There were some bad things that I didn’t like, and I will be sending a report to Help N Suffering hoping they can educate them in better ways. But most of the handlers were very good to their elephants!
