Favourites in Jaipur

My husband and I are visiting Jaipur in April and we just wondered if you experienced Indiamike travellers could tell us of your favourite places in Jaipur and why.

Amber Palace, City Palace, Badi Chopdi (for shopping) are the main attractions.

I found Jaipur just to be the place to chill out and walk the streets all day. But yet again, I was there on a Sunday.

I spent a few days there and had fun driving camel carts around town and riding elephants.

I last visited Jaipur more than a decade ago but vividly remember the Hawa Mahal - the Palace of Winds. Worth checking out.

To me, everything comes second to the Raj Mandir cinema

The forts and palaces are all amazing though, and there are some lovely markets.

There is a fairly new book out which might be of interest. Jaipur: 10 Easy Walks by Dharmendar Kanwar, published by Rupa & Co in New Delhi in 2004. I purchased it from Indiaclub.com, a great site for books on India. One of the great features of the book is the colored photos of some of the mentioned sites. There are also older similar books for Delhi and Kolkata.

All the forts are definitely worth seeing as is the Palace of Winds.Next to the City Palace the Jantar Mantar (Observatory) was fascinating and kind of surreal. It was one place where I wish we hadn't been so tight and forked out for a guide to find out what all those weird looking things were actually used for.

For great views over Jaipur try the revolving restaurant on top of the OM Tower. The food was delicious but a bit pricey but we felt the ever changing views over Jaipur more than made up for this.

Like sanjeev mentioned: Get out towards Galata & the monkey valley, Its quite special, Temples , Terraces Views, all in pretty good condition though deserted now except for the monkeys,,,,,,,,,,,
It's 8-10miles, 20-30 mins in a tuk-tuk will get you there.

On the way stop at Sisodia Rani gardens all constructed in the 18-19th century, Multi levelled gardens, watercourses & beautifully frescoed pavillions.

Also if you go to Amber don't just go up to the fort, take a walk around Amber village it's very beautiful/interesting itself,
