Did I get ripped off?

Hey

Just come back from a 2 week tour round Rajastan - amazing but hot!

We bought some silk shirts in Jaipur. We paid Rs.1200 for each silk shirt to be tailor-made and delivered to our hotel. I also bought one other silk shirt (their 'finest' quality supposedly) for Rs.3200.

Got the prices down from Rs.2200 and Rs.4500 respectively.

Did we pay too much?

Thanks
Joe

How did you happen to locate this high quality shirt maker?

Depends how you look at it ..

Do you like the shirts ?
Do they fit you well ?
Do you feel good wearing them?

Then you didn't get ripped off ..

Seriously .. You didn't

Quoted for truth. Absolutely agree.

You're a tourist in Rajasthan. You gots to suck it up! I've paid way over the odds for stuff before. Kind of comes with the territory. Considering the kinds of scrapes people can and have gotten into, no, absolutely not, you did not get ripped off.

If its a good quality silk shirt and tie that you apparently liked also, its a genuine price.

question should be, would you find bespoken, tailor-made, 'delivered to your door' silk shirts for a similar price anywhere in the uk? it's too late to cry now, be happy with your bargaining skills and enjoy your purchase!

Well... I could buy, for instance, raw silk for Rs100-plus a metre. I could get a kurta made for one or two hundred for the tailoring, so the material might be 300 to 600 (maybe more!), lets say 200 (as I haven't done this for a few years) for the tailoring. 500 to 800.

Now consider the extra work and stitching involved in a formal Western shirt, with buttons, cuffs, buttons...

As to UK... I used to pay equivalent of 3,000 to 4,000 for ready-made cotton shirts --- and some of that was at sale prices too!

I'm voting with the "NO, you did not get ripped off" for all the reasons given.

You are talking about a very small total sum (consider the price of your plane ticket) & if you like what you got, just enjoy your shirts. You probably paid a "tourist price" but that's our "job" We do the best we can with bargaining, but the odds always favor the locals!

Getting ripped off is really subjective. Spending $2,000 for a carpet worth $500--that's getting ripped off--no I didn't do that but I know it happens.

Comon its all relevent, if you like it and if it fits you well and you love the cloth..its worth every penny..
Being here on the internet where we cannot touch, feel and see the cloth and stiching, we cannot comment..but I think if you're happy you got a good deal.
BTW My silk Kurta (shirt) {not real silk} cost me INR 2000...but I liked it and I bought..and I feel happy whenever I wear it..

Your driver probably got 300 rps for talking you to their shop plus a couple hundred more commish on sales price. But he probably saved you some time, money & consternation in finding a silk tailor on your own.

Did you do as well as you possibly could have if this was say a reality TV challenge to get the cheapest deal possible .... probably not! Did you get absolutely ripped off considering the parties involved & the special deliver to the hotel? ,,,, ermmmm no!
