Bazaar in Jaipur (and Jewelry shopping)
I read on wikitravel that there is a bazaar in Jaipur which is "a brilliant colorful explosion of flowers, elephants, ox carts, and wares!..." (http://wikitravel.org/en/Jaipur#Buy)
where is this bazaar? and also, I read that Rajasthan is famous for jewelry. So I have a couple of questions: 1) is Rajasthan mostly gold/silver/semi-precious stone embedded jewelry etc? Coz I'm not really looking for expensive things like that really. I just want the designs to be nice. I mean I live in HK and Indianshops here sell imported-from-India earrings for about HK$50 (around US$7) and I'm hoping to find the same stuff for much less over there. 2) I read in (http://www.realindiatours.com/shopping-in-india.html)that Jaipur is really famous for Jaipur Enamel, Minakari and Kundan. Where are some cheap shops for these kinds of jewelry? And finally (sorry for so many questions!), I'm just wondering where Indian women shop for their jewelry. I read that a lot of Indian women spend most of their money on jewelry and that's why there is so much of it available coz there's such a big market. But all the guides I've read so far are places for tourists. Thanks! |

The whole of the old Jaipur city is color full. That is painted in sort of red color and may be this is the reason the city if called 'Pink City'.
USD 7 translates to INR 350. That should be ok to find some cheap stones. Note that Jaipur is an expensive city. Most of the shops at 'Johri Bazaar' are big and sell expensive stuff. There are other markets also: Bapu Bazar, Nehri Bazar. All these are near by. Just walk around, do some window shopping and buy whatever you want. As already mentioned above, bargain well. |

There is also Chemeliwala Market.
Not quite the "ambiance" of the mad bazaar, but a lot of the big expensive shops have smaller shops there. There are a couple of good bookshops, and a plethora of tourist hotels. I got some really good bargains there, and half the price of the big bazaar stores.
