Virgin traveler
My girlfriend and I will be traveling to India for a little over 5 weeks in February. We have gotten a great deal of wonderful information from the forums. Still we have many more questions though. (1)How to budget...we hope to have $1000 USD each for the trip and if possible we hope to catch a cheap flight to Thailand for a week. We arrive in New Delhi and plan to hit Rajathan-Darmashala-New Delhi-Agra-Varanasi-Darjeeling-Calcutta…This is the area/direction we plan to go. Is this possible to do in Six weeks??!! This will be our first time back-packing in another country. Lonely planet and indiamike has been our travel bibles so far. Any advice or tips are much appreciated.
Take care and be well! Aaron awilson@elon.edu |

welcome to india mike.
That is a lot to do in six weeks (I had even more planned first time I went ).I would say its a lot depending on how long you wanted to spend in each place. You could do agra in a day if you just want to see the taj, are you flying out of dehli or are you going to book a flight out of india? Im going for two months with my girfriend and we plan to do dharamasala varanasi and a mayeb rajistan as well. I will let you know how I get on over there. You dont want to spend to much of your time on a train/booking trains ![]() |

Thanks for the reply. We are ariving and departing from New Delhi. I figured we would stay around 2 days in each distination and if it is a place we love we will stay untill it is time to go. We are very interested in the mountian towns. It would be a dream for us to stay in a buddhist monistary. I don't know if you have traveled to any of these distinations but if so how would you rate one over the other if it came came down to doing raj over some mountian town.... I think that the places we pick take a lot of different aspects of indian culture from religion to forts to long deep history set amoungts a wide palet of different backgrounds.

I would spend all my time at a hill town and avoid Rajasthan altogether, given a choice ! Please note that the hill towns of Dharamsala and Darjeeling will be pretty chilly in February; you'll enjoy a lot more if you can commence your trip in March. And yes, two days at any place in the hills are far too less!!

Dear Spwrangler and Dear "Spwrangler's girlfriend",
Hi! I'm quite excited, as this is my first posting on Indiamike! So, welcome to India! 1. February is the best season to be in India, even for visiting the Hill Stations (as we call them here). March,a s suggested by our friend atIndiamike, may be somewhat hot. 2. While the hills take you closer to the nature, away from the noise and fumes that we live with in urban life, the tourist places of Rajasthan offer a lot more - monuments proudly representing India's rich cultural heritage, the charm of the desert, colourful people, and their even more colourful festivals. 3. But, travelling is enriched if the spice of variety is added to the recipe of the itinerary! So, let there be a judicious mix of the two - the hills and the Raj. Also, consider visiting the South - Kerala, to be specific. If you add Kerala to your tour plan, it means you will spend in all 4 more days just travelling (unless u r planning to fly), but spend a week in Kerala and you will feel amply rewarded! Wish u good luck! - Musafir. |

Thanks for the information. We are meeting with a friend of ours who teaches here and is from india (Kolkata). Hopefully she will give us good info just as we have been getting off this site. I think we might just do Jaipur, then head up to Armristar-dalhousie-darmassala-chamba-etc.....make our way down and then head east to varanasi and so-fourth. Unfortunately I don't think we will have time to make it to the south this trip. But thanks for the info. I looked up Kerala and it sounds very interesting. Thanks for all the replys and the info. I will be in touch! take care and be well all!
