Two months in India, a photo journal

My wife and I went to high school in New Delhi as teenagers. We returned together 40 years later to see what has changed. We visited 13 cities in India with a side trip to Kathmandu. We took thousands of photos and posted the best ones on our website.. a photo journal of our trip.

You certainly have some wonderful photographs.

If you don't mind me asking, what sort of camera & lens(es) did you use ?

Was the colour saturation as taken or was there post image processing done ?

Cheers

Just looking at your site now ... Its great!
Loads quickly, and has some really good photos.
Also projects a very nice impression of your time there.

I would love to have a site like this myself ... well done.

I used a Nikon D-80 with a 18-200mm zoom. I wanted just one lens so I wouldn't be fumbling around in my camera bag when I saw a photo op. Keeping one lens on the camera also cut down on the dust the could get on the sensor. The photos were edited in Photoshop, usually only the levels were corrected not the saturation.

Aaargh!

Must you post things like this? Now I have seen your pictures, I want to visit even more Indian cities. Jolly well stop it, at this rate I'm going to have to take a YEAR off work!

Seriously, it is a good layout for a travel journal, and what a great set of pictures!

It would be interesting to know how you went about photographing people, especially those who do not speak English. You have really captured some great images there. Did you ask whether it was okay to take their picture, or just do it anyway?

I have to ask what is obviously a dumb question... When I go to India, am I really going to see stuff like that? (I know there isn't a special cool India that other people get to travel to, I just can't believe that little ol' me is going to be going all that way and seeing anything that amazing!)

Forgot to say, Welcome to IndiaMike.

I think it depends where you go! Even I feel the same when I look at pictures like these from up North. Wow! Elephants in the Street? Do they really have those? It seems very exotic compared to my South!

But then my Chennai has become my normal; it might be exotic to you!

A lovely pictorial travelogue, Pagal Admi; I really enjoyed the time I just spent with it

You are right, Eight finger Eddie has to get out of the country every six months and then re enter India. He said he usually does this in Kathmandu during the summer and I think he said Sri Lanka in the winter. Thanks for your comments!

Thanks Haylo

Will you see stuff like that?... of course you will! But seeing things and having them register in your mind like a photo is not as easy as it sounds. Traffic, noise, pollution, crowds, heat and maybe stomach ailments can be great distractions. Life in India is on display for all to see and each time you leave your hotel you should be prepared for a full range of emotions. Sharpen your observation skills so you won't miss a thing. You will feel like you are a television with the setting stuck on vivid.

I rarely have trouble taking photos of people in India. With todays digital cameras and the full range zoom lenses available it is easier than ever. If you ask permission, the opportunity to get a candid shot is gone. When I got yelled at once a simple "I am sorry" sufficed. The faster you can take a shot the better.. still I feel that Indians on the whole like to have their picture taken. I would be much more uncomfortable taking photos here in the States of people on the street than I am in India.

Thanks for the welcome to the forum!

Good point, I suspect that until the culture shock wears off a bit, I will be focussing on blanking some of it out!

Thank you for the advice, especially on speed. I will be bringing my Nikon Coolpix 5000, and its slow start up speed is its only real downside. Being a short fairly harmless looking woman, I may get away with being more, especially taking photos of women.
