Travel to India with child

Dear all,

I am planning on going to India with my son, he is 6 years old. We will fly to Delhi and form there I want to go north to Shimla and then I am planning on going to Udaipur.

Does anyone have some expierence on traveling trough India with kids? Especially for these regions? Or does anyone have other tips for nice places to visit with a child? Everything is very welcome!

I already read some story's on the forum, but this is all a bit dated.

Thanks in advance!

XKiman

I too recommended Dhans' articles but if you've read those then take a look at my blog which details all the planning, including preparing the kids. The link appears below, in my signature.

We travelled in March/April 2009 with our 11 and 8 year old girls who had a whale of a time, loved every minute of it. We did a fair bit of planning upfront but it paid off. We spent months including them in every aspect of the trip, watching films together, swapping our Sunday Roast for a Sunday Curry which we all cooked together so that they got used to the spices (names, tastes, smells). I also bought India based books/novels for them to read. It was all very worthwhile. Maybe this doesn't apply for a 6 year old.

We went to Udaipur which is where we saw many western children, in fact the only place.

Please ask me any questions you've got.

Dear OceanTragic,
Thanks for your reply!
I do have some questions..
Did you travel by train to Udaipur and if so, where did you make reservations for the Delhi-Udaipur trip?
Did your childeren have any problems, did they get sick or anything?
And, last question, what are nice places to visit in Udaipur ( for kids ).
Thank you very much in advance!!
Warm regards,
Kiman

Hello dear,

You can easily get the Train from Delhi to Udaipur & you nothing get the problem with kids.
But the only one thing you must to that is reservation in the train.

You'll find lots of info about my trip on my blog, see link below, including the map of our tour, details of trains and booking them.

But for now...

We travelled by car+driver for 10 days from Delhi to Udaipur. At Udaipur the driver left us and returned to Delhi, leaving us to fend for ourselves.
We stayed at the Jagat Niwas Palace Hotel which is beautiful and the kids really enjoyed the hotel, sitting in the balconies for breakfast, lunch and dinner.
We travelled away from Udaipur to Jaipur on an overnight train which we all loved.

It's a little ironic that I got ill and the kids didn't. They had a little diarrhoea but that's all and I think you can put that down to sunshine, heat and change of scenery.

They went horse riding which really was a stroll through the countryside.
I didn't go as I got dysentery or something similar and was confined to bed for 2 days.
They loved the Bagore-ki-Haveli museum and also the dancing show afterwards.
We never got to do Monsoon Palace or a trip around the lake due to my illness.
They had henna painting done there too and loved it but I guess your son wouldn't want this done
They loved the City Palace too.

Are you only going to Shimla and Udaipur then?

In addition to Ocean; take it easy travelling. As you may have read in our journal, the chance of getting ill is much bigger once you rush through India.

Have fun,

Hans

Thank you all for your advice!
We will skip Shimla, because it will be to much of a rush. Will stay in Delhi one night and then directly to Udaipur with the Mewar Express. We will stay there couple of days in hotel mahendra prakash and then make our way back up, probably visit Bundi and Pushkar and hopefulley a wildpark that is open during monsoon!
Warm regards,
Kiman
