This is where I live
Here's a non-India thread... where do you live right now and what do you like about it? I've been thinking about this a lot lately as I have only 3 weeks left here in Auckland before swapping it for Bangkok... two very different cities. I like Auckland because my friends are here, because I can hop in my car and in about 45 minutes I can be at wild west coast beaches (or in 10 minutes I can be at crowded east coast beaches) or native stands of forest and bush, because I can get decent coffee, because there are lots of entertainment opportunities, because it never gets too hot or too cold, because I like shopping, because it has two beautiful harbours and a whole lot of volcanoes (The photo I've attached is from the top of Mt Eden which is an extinct volcano right in the middle of the city... beyond the crater in the background is the CBD, the Sky Tower and you can see the Harbour Bridge to the left. I walk up here a couple of times a week...also stunning views of the Hauraki Gulf and off shore islands). And for many other reasons. I really will miss it here.

This is a nice picture. And, as you describe it, Auckland seems to be a nice place. But trust me, Bangkok, or rather Thailand, is gonna blow your mind away. I spent 6 months in Thailand last year. And I loved every bit of it. Well, not the really touristy parts like Pattaya and most parts of Bangkok. But most places in the north and north-east. And some parts of the south. In fact, I'm already planning another trip in Feb next year. Check out some pics here http://www.synapsesoft.com/~yamla/Thailand1.htm .
Here's a picture of Herndon, a town close to Washington DC. This was taken from the balcony of my apartment one stormy evening. I've been living here for the last 10 months. I like the town. It's laid back, close to 2 national parks and the national capitol, and the people here are nice. But it's nothing compared to Delhi or Bangkok. ;-) Have a great time in the Land of Smiles. Cheers! nice pic, yamla (it's funny... i've taken pictures of sunsets all over the world but one of my faves is one i took in the small town i grew up in when i returned to new zealand in 1996 from a 2 year stint out of the country). i know what to expect from bangkok... have been there three times before. great for shopping and people watching and socialising and close to some rather more peaceful places. i am excited about going
but i'll still miss home. |

I live in a place which I'm not very happy with...esp because I come from a very vibrant and colourful country full of life....India...I live right now in kuwait...and would love to swap places with anybody living anywhere else in the world....except probably some strife infested african nation.....and of course iraq!!....kuwait is a rather dry and boring place to live...the only good thing about the country is the money....the amount of money one can make here is phenomenal...esp if you are white skinned...the arabs are obsessed with white skin....the only avenues for entertainment in kuwait are hanging around and killing time in shopping malls or driving around the peanut sized city......not very interesting....I can definitely say that this is one place I would love to leave and never return...

Two friends of mine lived in Kuwait 1994-96 and they said the same... very boring place to live. How long do you plan on staying there?

Be sure to wear a flower in your hair...
I live in San Francisco -- the only place in the US that I can stand to live. The climate is temperate, the scenery varied, the people (and their food) come from almost every country on the planet! And people are reasonably good to each other here. This is an odd view of the Oakland dry docks in the late afternoon, taken from my office window just above Highway 101. There is no bridge in this photo -- that's San Francisco Bay that you are looking at. |

I live in Chandigarh.
MadnoMad, If it had not been for it's proximity with the Westeran Himalayas I would have swapped it with you. It's a boring characterless city to live in. As my friend once said - There's something so depressing about that city though there's plenty of eye candy in the form of chiknas and chiknis with single digit IQs. ![]() |

I live in Paradise (Newcastle, NSW, Australia) - I don't have a photo but here's a link to just some of the beaches that are a short walking distance from me - this page doesn't include the other beaches that are a bus ride or a car ride away. Some of the best surfers from the world come from here, and also Silverchair (the band). Actually, I've never listened to Silverchair, I suppose I should try one of their albums. And all this is just a tiny facet of the city, there is sooooo much more, the amazing wilderness of the Hunter Valley (which also has some of the best vineyards in the world) and other stuff, lots and lots of stuff...Most people give Newcastle a miss as on the surface it looks very boring (that is the suburbs, which make up most of the town). There is an international backpackers now at one of the city beaches so occasionally I stumble across backpackers from around the world nowadays...
Here is the link for some photos of the city surf beaches - http://www.newcastlecitycentre.com/beaches/ What I like about the place is it is soooooo slow...very very slow...and Sydney is just down the road as well (about two hours). |

I live on one of the dozen or so islands between Vancouver Is. and mainland B.C. collectively known as the 'Gulf Islands'. Although 'homesteaded' fairly early in BC history due to excellent climate and easy access by boat, the islands now mainly attract vacationers, retirees, and also serve as a kind of haven for old hippies and other odd sorts seeking a low-impact lifestyle, particularly those with an interest in arts and crafts.
The top picture taken from a tiny stunt plane, hence the vibration-induced fuzzyness -- my house is the red-roofed one in more or less the middle of the picture. The other picture is my little house on a nice fall day. I built it in 1985 and it has served me well as a home base for when I'm not on the road. Last edited by -m2- : Sep 5th, 2003 at 00:22. |

Wonderwoman... San Francisco is a place I will definitely visit one day
Snain... wow, Chandigarh doesn't look like India at all LonelyWoolf... looks like a nice day in Vienna... have a great trip Samsara... did you live in Newcastle when they had the earthquake... I was in Sydney at the time and felt the tremors -m2-... looks fantastic (when you have mentioned the Gulf Islands before I always had a mental picture of you being on the eastern side of Canada... like over by Nova Scotia... didn't realise they were in B.C.) Driving to work this morning looking up at a pink cloud streaked sunrise (getting all sentimental again!!) I realised another thing I'm going to really miss... my favourite radio station... 95bfm. It's the local student station and it plays the best music here... a real cross section of good stuff and no tedious repetition like the commercial stations (let's hear Justin Timberlake for the ninth time today... no thankyou). Plus good interviews etc and some really funny moments. I guess I will be able to listen to it when I'm online (check it out 95bfm) . |
