On the way to Bangalore...
Hi all, everyone on these forums seems to be helping each other out, so I thought I'd try and get in on the action. I'm travelling from Seattle to Singapore to a year long teaching position in Bangalore in late June. I have the Seattle to Singapore leg bought and booked, but not the Singapore to Bangalore. I'm thinking of flying into Chennai or Cochin and making my way overland because my contacts in Bangalore won't be ready for me until the 28th (giving me a week to kill between the date I arrive in Singapore and the date I need to be at the school).
Any advice on an itinerary? I'm thinking of staying in Singapore a few days, flying into Chennai the 25th and making my way overland slowly for a couple days, but I don't know where or what I should visit nor the accomodation side of the puzzle. Any help/advice/tips anyone can give me would be much appreciated. |

Singapore can be covered in a day or two max. Then move to Chennai.
Chennai, Mahabalipuram - 3 days and to Nilgiri by train and toy train and two days there. Then proceed to bangalore by overnight bus. Good break and rest before you start the Work. Nilgiris will be pleasant at this time of the year. (Stay at Coonoor, a few kilometers before Ooty. Or Ooty also not a bad idea, little bit it will be crowded due to summer holidays etc.) Take care edited: Just Remembered: Nick-H or Colin (veteran Chennai IMers) can provide what to do 3 days in Chennai. webtraveller has suggested agood plan -- given that you have only a few days.. From ooty, you could hit Mysore on the way to Bangalare. Unfortunately monsoons will be at full swing in the state of Kerala.

If you reach Mysore area spend some time wildlife viewing and bird watching. Great way to relax and spend some time. Take a book along as well. I found Jungle Inn (see Hotel Listings/Karnataka/Jungle Inn) a great place. Also stop at Brindavan Gardens from Mysore-Bangalore.

You guys are awesome, thank you so much!!
On the note of the birdwatching, I'll be bringing my tripod and a 10x zoom digital (I wish I had the money for the dSLR and accompanying lenses, but that would be too greedy, heavy and conspicuous ![]() However, do you know of any more good birding areas in the region, or birding resources that cover this information, I will be there for a while so I'll have the time to make a bunch of quick jaunts into the rough. Thanks again |

Well, there's the Vedantangal Water Birds Sanctuary in northern Tamil Nadu. It's said to be one of the major breeding grounds of India and it's not next door to Bangalore but not very far away either.

hello fellow birder. I do birding tours here in PA, Indiaevan. The one I would suggest is Rhanghanathitu Bird Santuary betweem Mysore-Bangalore Road. You will need to take a car so as to stop over there. Buses and trains won't stop over for us fella bird watchers....
For more local information and also seasonal activity contact Mr. SR Aruna at Jungle Inn. Mention my name, Dan Devadatta. No gurantee my name will help ya but it sure won't get u into trouble. He is a wildlife expert of that area and also knows birding areas. |

Vedanthangal is near Chennai. But good time is during November through Feb.
Ranganthittu is near Bangalore, can be done any weeekend as one day trip. But, ddevadatta, when is the right time? Also you need not include this in your initial journey. This can be done on any weekend. The initial journey before you join, you can cover something like Ooty/Otacamund which takes a couple of days. Take care. ----------- World is still not enough. |
