Newbie x 3
Hi there
We are planning our first trip to India, three of us all completely new to it. We are arriving in Delhi on December 29th & will be there for three days; we fly home from Mumbai on Jan 11th and want to spend a few days in Kerala. I'm aware that this is a hell of a lot to fit into 14 day, any ideas as to how we get the most out of our trip would be very welcome. Thanks Mu |

Hello,
I'm arriving in Delhi on the 26th and am also going to Kerala for a while, leaving India (Mumbai) on 19th Jan. So,I'm sure you can manage your itinerary too. I'm using overnight trains to travel long distances. Perhaps with your time constraint, you should definitely be booking planes. Have a good read of this site, it's brilliant for loads of tips and info on travelling, hotels, climate etc. |

Try expedia or opodo, they were good at getting a good deal. Southall travel were also pretty decent but the best they could do for me was about £450 flying turkish airlines and a 6 hr stop over in istanbul |

Thanks Guys
At the moment we've decided on 5 nights Delhi, 6 nights Kerala and 2 nights Mumbai but we're undecided on North or South Kerala. Cochin looks really interesting, more so than the towns of South Kerala but the beaches of South Kerala have a very strong allure too. Can't seem to see any mention of beaches near Cochin in Lonely Planet, anyone know of any so that we can combine the two attractions? Or has anyone any recommendations, places they've experienced that would be a good alternative? |

Hi again,
I'm going to Cochin too, along with Trivandrum and, hopefully, Cape Comorin. I'm using overnight trains to cover the long distances involved and I'm gettng quite giddy about it all now. Have a great, safe trip. ![]() |

Yes really getting excited about south India now lots to do not enough time to do it in! Can't really decide amoung the three of us what to do & what not to do & if we don't get on with it we're going to end up staying in a tent!
Also .. we've seen reference to indian toilets & western toilets, can anyone tell us what the difference is? kullukid - found a flight from Heathrow to Bombay for £260 inc taxes on Air Gulf through Opodo.co.uk. |

Toilet search!
It could be because I'm quiet tired tonight but my toilet search has not revealed the difference between indian & western toilets to me ... learnt a bit about toilet paper though.
Anyway .. on to more serious matters. I've made reservations at the Preeth Beach resort in Varkala but having read some of the treads on this site it seems that wasn't such a wise idea. Have worked out that the south side is quieter but not sure which of the recomended hotels are on the south side, can anyone enlighten me? But ... one thing I really do love to do is swim in the sea, I've also read on the site that's not a good idea, so maybe the Preeth is a good idea for its pool. Oh ... decisions!! |

Hehe... try the classic How Do You Wipe? A POLL OF POLLS. I seem to remember an equally famous photographic account but can't find it. Look for "toilet[s]" in this site's photo galleries.
ps Ah look here go: http://www.indiamike.com/photopost/s... n=&whenterm=

you mention sleeping in a tent ? unlikely .If you just turn up in town you will find accommodation , Or more likely the accommodation will find you .Last time i arrived in Varkala ,the rickshaw dropped me of by the beach ,on the way down i was spotted and within 3 minuets was escorted to a nice ,cheap ,clean room ,no problem .As for the difference between a western toilet and an indian / asian one. western is what you know and the indian one you will have to assume a different position i.e squat . the porcelain is flat and set into the floor with a hole for waste and platforms for feet.

Thanks guys for the toilet info now I'm seriously worried ... I'm ambidextrous!! Actually doesn't look too much more basic than the hole in the floor types in France but I guess I'll have to find my own answer to the left hand or paper question when the time comes.
The tent was a joke, trying to make light of my first time anxieties. Thanks freenote feeling less anxious about it all now, I’m sure we’ll find somewhere to put our heads down. |
