Welcome to Indiamike. It's a great place. I have gotten lots of advice from here and the people are awesome. I am a NRI raised in US too. I hope you don't find this post nosy or rude, but I just had to write. Please think twice about med school in India. Indian doctors are an asset to the US system but are not always treated with the respect they deserve. It's an uphill battle and there is always a prejudice against IMG's..lots of people I know are going thru it and went thru it. Unless of course you plan to stay on in India and work there as a doctor, then more power to you...peace...
P.S. bangalore is the best city, I love it there. ![]() |

welcome back to india. But why you want to see only the B'lore IM'ers? Try to visit all the places in India (Specially W Bengal, because American bread may be more tasty with Bengals 'Rasgulla' ) |

Hello Comet Rising:
Welcome to IM. I am also new to IM, after I read the article in the USA Today. Having fun on this site. Welcome also to Bangalore, my own hometown. Great place to live and work and you will find Bangalorians very receptive. You will also enjoy the food there. My family still lives there and I enjoy the visits I do take. Good luck! |

Hey there Comet, its great to know that you are looking forward to med school. Its quite different from the US, where we went to school and where we established patterns of study etc. But the experience in India left me enriched and I also met my husband that way...
But honestly all in all I wouldnt do it again. Even though I got into residency that most IMG's cannot get into and my husband got a fellowship thats very competitive for IMG's(Cardio), I guessed we lucked out. But so many people didnt and resorted to being called "bed pan" docs in very trashy hospitals.I am glad to see you want to help this world. Thats a great thing. Well of course our dads did well, they came in the 70s and 80s. You had IMG's back then who got Ortho, Radiology, Cardio, Gastro, Vascular Surg or Opthal at the drop of a hat. It has totally changed since then. Now its so different than even 7-8 years ago. The chances for an IMG to get the harder specialities is very very slim. And there is only so much dad can do, believe me. But you know, indian doctors are amazing and very hard working. And I am still proud to be a part of that fraternity. I wish you all the best in Bangalore. Study for the Step 1, as soon as you finish the basic sciences, dont wait like the other kids and do it after you come back here. your scores will be significantly higher. Hope you dont mind me telling you this, I am just being a concerned IMer..and a new friend THanks and take care! |
