Hi
I was looking through some stuff on India and I came across this site. I am a college student from the US and I spent a month this past winter studying and dancing in India. I am proficient in Bharatantyam so we spent time in Chennai, Madurai and Kerala performing and taking classes. India was truly like nothing that I have ever experienced and we were lucky enough to have our teach, Kausalya Srinivasan with us there and she provided such nice accomidations for us while we were there. While residing in Madurai we stayed in a small village with the president actually and I saw the biggest spider i have ever seen in my life. It was very different and overwhelming being out of the country for the first time and having India be my first experience was something I will never forget. We spent the winter holidays there and that was also a treat. I have never been as sick as I have as to when I returned home though. I actually ended up in the hospital. I really am able to look back on the experience now and feel truly blessed for being able to be a part of it. I still study Bharatanatyam and still frequently speak with my teacher. I hope to someday get to northern India. |

Welcome to indiamike. Can you write in detail about why you chose Bharatantyam and how you found the teacher.

I go to Bridgewater State College in Massachusetts and they have Kausalya Srinivasan come over from Chennai every year as a full bright scholar to teach the dance majors there. So I have been taking Bharatanatyam with her for the past three years. We have performed a few shows here and we also performed over in Chennai and appeared in a magazine spread and on television.

I spent some time in Chennai and it was crazy.Trying to navigate with 11 american girls through the pondy bazaar was ridiculous. I never experienced anything quite like it. I was there for new years of this year and I was staying at the Savera Hotel and the stage over the pool collapsed cauing quite a riot so that was quite the experience as well. We were interviewed for a magazine and we ended up actually having our pictures be the centerfold.
I traveled by train down to Madurai and stayed in this village. We were lucky enough to stay with the president of the village and our house was amazing and I also encountered the creepiest spiders in my room EVERY night. While in the village all the americans and i went to a school to teach dance. It was amazing to see the respect we received from the students. We did all the temple sight seeing as well. I did not adapt well to the food at all. Kerala was our next stop. Spent some time doing katha kali and sight seeing. Went to the beach a few times. Did some yoga and even got to ride an elephant. After a week there we flew back to Chennai to perform. We combined our bharatanatyam skills with a young down syndrome girl named Babli and had our show broadcasted on television. It went well and was really an amazing time. When I arrived home I got very sick. I would eat and five minutes later it would coming right out. I developed a lactose intolerance and I was actually hospitalized here in the states for a week... the final verdict was giardia.... disgusting |

![]() Would you care to explain the difference between Bharatanatyam and Kuchipudi styles(perhaps in the new dance thread)? For me, it all looks the same, even the clothes/costumes. ![]() |
