Thanks for the welcome,
I'm a bit worried because my boyfriend isn't a traveler and his logest time away from home without me was 5 days. He 's currently on his way (by bus) to srinagar i think... he's going to stay on a HB in Dal lake for about a week. He fled Dehli by bus at 11:00 yesterday morning (brussels time) because dehli was to crowded and he couldn't cope there. I didn't hear from him since yesterday evening 20:00 (brussels time) and he should have arrived there allready by now. I hope with all my heart that he 's ok.. Is there a possibility to use a cellphone in srinagar? is there a possibility for internet acces on a housboat? I don't know just as he doesn 't know. I think he went to India unprepaired..
Just one more question (because i'm worried sick by now) is that side of India safe for backpacking?
Thxs

Hi
Don’t worry Xcerikzhia
, your BF is busy now, he is enjoying the beauty of Srinagar. I had never been to that area so unable to give you right answer regarding cell phone and Internet connection in a houseboat. One of my friends has returned from there (recently) he told me that the disturbance in telephone is a common problem there and the situation is better now in J & K.
Regarding Internet access – cyber café can solve the problem if it is not available in HB.
Come on Xcerikzhia, it is not a looooooong time that you are not able to hear from your BF. This is India, you cant expect everything is scheduled and in time here. May be his bus is running a few hours late.
Those who knows that area personally may help you better but my personal opinion regarding backpacking is – can be avoided for the first time traveler. Don’t worry your friend will be fine, and do not forget to share his experience with us.
Cheers,
- Somnath

hello welcome to the site
have a look at Jaybel's thread about J&K. This is her experience about a very recent trip to that area. Don't worry. Your friend would come back as a 'changed man'.
Also you may have to listen (& tolerate! ) a lot of india stories and philosophies
, that's the only thing you have to seriously worried about him for the time being....

Thanks for making me feel a bit better.. it means a lot to me.
i'm a bit less worried now...
He's in India until sept. 14th, then he leaves from Bombay on a flight to Bangkok, there he will stay for 13 days and then he'll travel on to Sydney, and from Sydney to Adelaide.. From there he goes backpacking trough Australia for 3 months (he won 't be back in Belgium until June next year, and that for someone who hasn t' been away from home for more then 5 days LOL) After those 3 months he wil leave from Sydney with a flight to Christchurch in New Zealand and there he will stay for 10 days I think... not sure. After New Zealand he wil travel trough the United States of America.
As a thank you for making me feel better i will post his comments and logs here
Do you want all the logs or just the ones from India.
Ps: I wish I could join him helas, I didn 't have the chance.. I won't be seeing him till June next year and to be honest.. I don't know if I can handle it.
Ps 2: under wich subject may I post his travel logs please?
Grtz and love

Hi..
The regular cell phones don't wrk in J & K..it takes 48 hrs to get approval for a chip which can be only used in J & K..they are pretty strict due to the given situation. BUT there are many internet cafes and acess is pretty good..so please dont worry.. we were also on a HB and Internet acess from a HB is not possible.
I am certain your BF will be ok.

This could be the best section to post logs regarding Kashmir area. Just have a look through the sections / sub forums on IndiaMike and you will be able to find out the suitable place to post. We will love to read all the logs. It will be helpful to those IMers who will visit other countries including India.
Cheers,
