Smile Namaste! Alu gobi saste!

Taken from "Shantaram", by Gregory David Roberts:

"The Indians are the Italians of Asia...It can be said, certainly with equal justice, that the Italians are the Indians of Europe.
There is so much Italian in the Indians, and so much Indian in the Italians.
...Every man in both countries is a singer when he is happy, and every woman is a dancer when she walks to the shop at the corner.
For them, food is music inside the body, and music is food inside the heart.
The language of India and the language of Italy, they make every man a poet, and make something beautifull from every 'banalite'.
These are nations where love - amore, pyaar - makes a cavalier of a Borsalino on a street corner, and makes a princess of a peasant girl, if only for the second that her eyes meet yours."

OP: alu, gobi, gora, kala ... has me thrown off a little. what does that mean?

I hear what you've paraphrased but when I was in Rome recently and I couldn't see the first thing that reminds me of anything India related. Though the food was molto bene.

Salute.

Hello everybuddy!

Was nice coming back home from job now and reading your replies, thanx for your sweet posts and welkoms!

Asad 7874: i learned this "namaste, alu gobi saste" thingy from some kids on the way to Jageshwar, since then it stayed with me and have also taught it to few friends around...hehe...
About my signature, that also comes from Shantaram, Mr.Roberts said that four words himself to some guy approaching him in Mumbai, meaning exactly what you wrote as translation.. i did like it, and kindly borrowed it. So, is the exact spelling the way you wrote it?

Shilpaks: Happy to know my post made you smile...your country does that to me on a daily base..
And -yep- i did read "Fine Balance" by Rohinton Mistry, as you say it's a real good book as well, and the story unfold very nicely through all the pages...but yes, very Very very depressing at the end. I closed that book on that last page in a very bad and very down/sad mood...
While i was going through the story, even if it was getting harder and harder for the four protagonists, i still kept some hope that it would have ended up good...or at least on a "fine balanced" kind of way... but no, it didn't.
(sometimes i wonder if writers realize some very sensitive persons may read their books...but anyway, all in all, great book..)
And just to add some more about depressing books, man...how angry, pissed off and depressed i was when i read "The God of the Small Things" by Arundhati Roy..

Indojingai: alu gobi (alu=potato - gobi=cauliflower) is a typical vegetarian indian dish, try it if you never did
About gora and kala Asad7874 has given an accurate translation above...otherwise, for a little bit of homework, here's a usefull link: http://www.wordanywhere.com/
About Rome: how long have you been there? ..uhm..maybe it wasn't enough time to digest the place?..
but hey! every generalization has got its amount of exceptions!

..time to catch some zZzzZzz's now... Ciao!!!

Ooh.. those school boy/girls shenanigans... there are plenty more I can tell you. err... rather not, I will feel like a 12 years old.

hmm.. gora chehra kala man... I know that one but who are you saying this for?

Oh and saying that I may have never tried alo gobi... talk about generalizations. LOL (I am an Indian.)

Rome was great!!!. I've been there for short trips on a couple of occasions.
The coffee in small cups was like a caffeine bomb... 3 drops is all they put in thar cup.

When I visited Rome as an 11 yr old child, I came back and told my mum that "Rome is just like Bombay, and Italians are just like Indians !!! They are very much 'family oriented'. They even hang the drying laundry lines across the streets ! "

The only difference i found was that they eat their rice half cooked [indians eat fully cooked]. The Italian restaurant owner explained this by saying "your stomach pop out" [if you eat fully cooked rice ]

Little did an 11 yr old know that one should not make such broad generalizations ....
