me and the fam moving to India SOON
Hey folks- hope I am doing this right...just wanted to introduce myself.
Myself, my husband, my 14 year old son, and (hopefully) our dog- Asha- plan to move to India this summer (not sure yet whether this will be short or long term- just going to see how it works out). We are from Alaska (though we are currently in Asheville, North Carolina)- I am 31, my husband 35. We will be going with a very modest amount of $ and a lot of faith! In scouring through maps and our book, and on-line, of course, we decided the place that might best suit us is Darjeeling (or somewhere in that area). My husband loves to backpack/trek, and the climate seems most suitable for us (though we have every intention of exploring as many areas of India as possible...based on whatever circumstances we find ourselves in once we arrive!!!) My husband and I have both been working in social work for years- but have done many other types of work. We are hoping we will be able to find some type of employment once we get there. So glad I found this site!!! ![]() |

Welcome to IM. Hopefully you'll find a few useful morsels of information, and for anything that isn't listed here - don't hesitate to ask.

Try hooking up with your resume with some of the international social organizations like Oxfam etc. Unfortunately, most of them are based in Delhi, but network for work nevertheless. Darjelling is very far from Delhi, so you will have to travel back and forth to the major cities if you want employment in the social sector where you were working earlier.
North India has a lot more options to settle down near the hills. Try any place in Uttaranchal, like Dehradoon, Nanital, Mussurrie etc. The travelling time to Delhi is no more than 7 hours, in case you have to travel for work. |

Thanks, guys! I appreciate the warm welcome...hasn't been so warm elsewhere!!! We are not definite on where we would like to settle for a bit, so we are definitely open to any opportunity...we actually have contacts in Delhi, so maybe we should focus a bit there to see what presents itself.
Thanks again for the tips, sanjaymehra! |

Welcome, Ashakasha, stick around! I'm sure you'll have an "interesting" time (not intended like a Chinese curse, honestly!) - Look forward to hearing more about it here.
