Not good at this introduction business.

Anyone think the new ID card scheme will affect tourists somehow? I'm afraid the govt will change the liberal visa policy before I even get over there.

India - liberal visa policy - not compared to the many other countries, which offer 'visas on arrival' or electronic visas.

We here in the U.S. can get the best type of tourist visas from India--10 year multiple entry.

Definitely NOT liberal, as you say, since India does require them and they are very costly & frequently a hassle!

I still don't know what the OP is talking about though--ID cards? Where? For whom? And what does that have to do with Visas?

Welcome to the forum
The new ID cards won't come into effect anytime soon. A billion people, a billion cards, ... but expect the best ever biometric technology to shape up, right here in India.

Indian Government have hired the head honcho of Infosys, the leading IT company to devise multipurpose ID cards for all Indians.

Thank you!

Well, now that I know about the ID project for a billion Indians (which will surely take some time!), I can say that I still don't know what that would have to do with foreigners getting Visas!

I'll just take a guess and say NOTHING! ID is an internal policy. Visas are agreements made between countries.

The ID project has nothing to do with visas at all. Just a bit of confusion spread by one line in the original post.

True, nothing to do with visas on the face of it, and of course the ID project won't be implemented or completed for years; but my worry is that sooner or later this increasing bureaucracy will spread to visa policies, much sooner if we see more terrorist activity from Pakistan -- which is likely, I think. I suppose this isn't the place for political speculation though. Sorry.
