Indian female travelling alone

Hi,

I am an indian female, single, in the 20s planning to travel to india alone. Mainly to Rishikesh in the North. I am a bit weary about travelling alone. Can anyone please advise if it is safe. I am particularly concerned about catching a train from Delhi to Rishikesh. I have been to india 10 years ago and I know what indian men are like...I went with family then.

If anyone has been in a similar situation please let me know if it is safe.

Thanks very much...

How could anyone possibly answer this question?

I'm going to America. Will I get fat?
I'm traveling in Africa. Will I be safe?
I'm going to Canada. Will I get hit by a car?
I'm going to Europe. Will I get lost?

Etc.

No one can seriously answer your question. Please go to "Women/Men seeking travel partners" thread and read what has been put there.

mera two bits

Cook up an alibi, say you're doing a social survey for the Indian govt. or something. Make it sound a little officious. It'll ward off lots of unwarranted attention.
The north, namely Himachal, Ladakh etc. are pretty single woman friendly. My wife used to travel all over and never got into a situation she couldn't handle on her own.
"I know what Indian men are like" is a racist comment, and I hope more travel changes your perspective.

Friend if you are worried about travelling from Delhi to Rishikesh then rethink whether you should really come to India.
I am an Indian man & happy to learn that you already know how Indian men are!
Good luck.

not necessarily! It's a fact that people are different (pobably mostly because of different cultural backgrounds and not because of biology/race). I don't understand that phrase as valuing and therefore also not as racist.
just my opinion..

Surprised to find everyone pouncing on the OP ! Her statement on Indian men was a generalisation, not a racist comment, the way I see it. There's a grain of truth in what she says, though the generalisation may be incorrect.

A young lady travelling alone in India- whether Indian or foreigner- necessarily has to be careful and take the normal precautions, though she need not get unduly alarmed.

As for the OP's specific query on travel between Delhi and Rishikesh, I suggest travelling by the early morning Shatabdi Express between ND and Haridwar - safe journey - and then taking a bus from Haridwar to Rishikesh, again a safe journey; at least in the daytime, for a lone lady traveller.

All the best and have a great trip !

Well, if you are an Indian female and you know Indian males then what is the problem?!!! India is as safe or unsafe as any other country in the world. It is how you behave and react that makes a lot of difference and the attitude you have towards life. If you think that someone is out to get you then no one can help you but if you take the normal precautions when travelling alone (it does not matter if you are female or male) then nothing much can go wrong. Like Shanthi said take a look at her forum thread for details on how to tackle men in India, very helpful advice there. Hope you have a safe and pleasant journey throughout India and enjoy it all!!! Hope this helps.

Cheers,
Aadil.

Agree with Shimla it's a easy question why all the dumb comments??

Merchant if you can't add anything positve why bother???

Generally speaking you'll be safe in any public enviroment like the train, as Shimla says the Delhi-Dehra Dun Shatabdi to Haridwar, usually full with families and a good mixture of women alone and men. Here you'll feel very comfortable and quite at ease. Stay up In the Swargashrem area or near Laxman Jhula, safe and interesting and there are plenty other single girls who you could hook up with!
Whilst there find a mate and go walking along the banks of the Ganga, great way to spend your time!

Enjoy your trip and try not to worry too much with sensible precautions you'll be fine!

hi purvi, I can assure you that once you feel comfortable and not afraid in your mind - you will project the same to your surroundings and nothing "bad" will happen. I could give you this advise even if I didn't take an overnight local bus jorney in India just a week ago, but after that I guess I'm more competent Although it wasn't one of my trip highlights (and not because of the indian men ) I felt safe and even enjoyed my cultural observations - and there were a lot in my 15 hours journey
I hope your thoughts will be more positive and you will enjoy your trip!!

its as safe as the precautions you take. if you are indain(looking) than you are already better off -- as in being less conspicuous as a target.
