I'm on my way...

Hi, my partner and I are traveling to Delhi on the 7 nov and plan to blow a wirlwind aross the north in 2 weeks. Golden triangle, Amritsar, Badhavgarh and Kharagpur. If anyon can recommend somewhere to stayin Kharagpur for 1 night I would appreciate the advise as I can find nothing on the internet (unless you are staying at IIT). Hope to post more soon and thanks for letting me join the gang.

Welcome to IndiaMike (from your neighbour)

Sounds like you're planning a pretty hectic couple of weeks.

Welcome to India Mike! I'm also arriving in Delhi on the 7th!

Can't help you with Karagpur as I've never even heard of this town. You'd probably be the only foreign tourists there. It would have just one or two hotels catering to Indians. Here's some info I just found. You might want to send them an email:

HOTEL PARK ,Dhami-centre, chota-tengra, near I.I.T, Kharagpur, West-Bengal, INDIA. Pincode-721301
E-mail: hotelpark.kgp@in.com / mintoKS@gmail.com
Phone: +91-3222-223081/645837.Mobile no: +91-9474682660 /+91-9434959391.
(The only HOTEL in Kharagpur,just2 K.M`s from Railway Station and very near to I.I.T, for comfortable Stay in a homely atmosphere, in a serene green surrounding with all modern amenities with A.C/Non A.C rooms. Also open air garden restaurant,Multi-cuisine A.C Bar and separate A.C Family restaurant serving North-Indian,tandoori,chinese and South-Indian Dishes,Car-parking,Travel agent on call and many more facilities)

Happy travels :-)

Thanks both for your replies. Shivani, many thanks for the info, we are really excited about our trip. I spend some weeks working in Pune a couple of years back but my partner has never been to India and I never had a chance to do much tourist stuff. Kharagpur is way off the tourist trail, as far as I can see, but my wife has familiy that originated there and left in '47. Her aunt is 90 this weekend and we feel that it would be great to be able to come home with some news from her birthplace. Thanks again.

Kharagpur has the longest railway platform in the world. Which means that if you find no other place to stay, the platform would be a good hideaway. Many a blessed relative of mine has passed out from IIT Kharagpur (and one or two have passed away altogether).

I hope Jyotida here as an ex-alumni chips in with his suggestions. And there's also nattusbs who, hopefully (when he is spared some time from teaching those wannabe geeks in IIT and his German Shepherd), shall give some on the spot guidance.

Oops ! Just spotted this other thread :

Arrgh! Help please. I have booked train tickets from KGP back to HWH and they have been booked as RLWL - which I take to be waiting list. How likely is it I would get in the train (2704 Falaknuma Exp) and is it just that I might have to take a lower class? I don't mind, as long as I can get back to HWH that night.

Thanks

I suggest you copy your post into your other thread (Acc in K) as member Nattusbs has a lot of knowledge (and more importantly experience) of trains in that area.

Some info is essential when asking this kind of question, what class is the obvious question, and what date is almost as important, is your travel time/date flexible?

For example, the Falaknuma allows only 4 bookings in 2A and 10 in 3A (KGP - HWH), so you can see where you may have a problem waiting for people to cancel their 2A tickets.

The Ispat Express (an hour later) will have availability (in air con chair class) as it only allows bookings 10 days in advance, but I've no idea how reliable the train will be, what time is your flight?

Hi

I posted this in the other thread. One suggestion: please post in only one thread - posting in more than one actually makes it more confusing, rather than the other way around, which is what one would expect!

No worries. I can find you an "Hinglish" speaking driver. Actually, Nov 21st is a Saturday and I or the driver should be able to take you around in my car/ or hire car. How many of you will be in the party?

Re: going to Kolkata airport on 21st evening for the early morning flight to Delhi (what time does that depart?), my suggestion is to have the hired car take you straight from KGP to CCU airport - I use it all the time when I fly, it is much more convenient than taking the train to Howrah and then getting a cab in the crowd. The car fare to the airport is about Rs 2000 (since he has to make a round-trip).

Do let me know.

Cheers

Nattusbs

PS: Go late night by the hired car from KGP to CCU - you will have the flexibility rather than by train.

Nattusbs, you are a life saver. There are 2 of us. Our relations used to life around 2nd Ave and Wynne ave. We would like to see/hear about anything that might relate to their time in KGP (i.e. pre 1948). Their Father was a supervisor on the WBNR(?). We would really appreciate a guide or any help/info. Sorry about getting the threads wrong, I'm new to this and see I have a bit of learning to do.

Thanks

No problem - I will have to find someone who would know that area - those street names may have changed over the last 60 years ! But then, how many streets are there in KGP?

I have a funny story. One of my colleagues recently retired (2 months ago) as a Prof from my department - he is Punjabi and was actually born in KGP (since his Dad used to work for the Indian Railways), did all of his studies in KGP (ALL, incl all 3 degrees from IIT-KGP incl Ph.D.) and then worked all his life as Prof at IIT KGP. If he were here, I am sure he would know the names of the streets.

I shall see what I can do. Any more thoughts on the hired car for the day and taking both of you to CCU airport from KGP on the 21st night? Really, that is most convenient, plus at this time of the year one does not need A/C in the car. There is a new highway built and for the most part rather good. It also bypasses the city of Kolkata in such away that one can easily get to the airport from the highway. If you still want to take the train, I can search the most convenient one - a couple of them have AC Chair car if that's what you prefer - but, seriously, landing up in Howrah station at night, standing in queue for a cab, is not the most enjoyable experience. Unless, you have plans already made in Kolkata.

I will invite both of you for dinner on the 20th night (what time do you arrive?) or 21st night at the only "nice" place in KGP - walking distance from The Park. I will also show you around especially IIT! We have a horticulture on campus and the 2nd half of Nov is when they sell "seedlings" of flowering plants to the "inmates" (as I jokingly call all of us on campus).

Cheers

Nattusbs

Thanks, yes we would like to take a car to CCU. We have not booked a hotel yet, but would like to get one near the airport so that we don't have a big trek early in the morning. Dinner on the 20th sound absolutely great, although I think that we should be taking you as a thank you. We would love to the IIT, it is famous, even in the UK. 2nd ave, apparently, is one of the roads running parallel to the south entrance of the station. They mentioned a bandstand and the 'Institute' which they described as a community hall/ dance hall. I hope to buy a pre-paid sim when we arrive in Delhi. We get there next saturday (7th nov) and are travelling over the next 2 weeks before getting to KGP. I will have a small wifi device so hope to be able to follow IM. How should we arrange meet up? Is it sensible/ettiquette to put e-mail addr or phone on an open forum?
Thanks
