I Love this site!

Hi everyone, I just wanted to quickly introduce myself and say hi. Last summer I went to India with a medical team and backpacked throughout Himachal Pradesh and set up medical sites at small villages. After that, my friend and I went to Varanasi, Bodhgaya, Mumbai, Bangalore, Mysore, Agra, and of course New Delhi.
Well after spending an entire summer in India, I've absolutely fallen head over heels in love with it. I'm currently a 2nd year medical student and am thinking of taking a year off between my 2nd and 3rd year to go and travel some more in India.
If any of you know any volunteer medical organizations that take on medical students, please let me know as I'd like to contribute something back to this beautiful country if I decide to take a year off.

Thanks everyone and thanks for such a great site!

SP

Well actually I have been to Ahmedabad many times with my parents (they're from Varodra) as well as Jaipur. On this last trip I had gone to India without them and wanted to see the rest of India.

Wonderful that you're thinking of volunteering in India. I don't know of medical organisations that accept volunteers, but a search for health NGOs India, got me a number of listings of Non Govt Organisations working in the health sector. See...

http://www.medindia.net/onlinesearch...ch.asp?catid=7

http://www.ldb.org/vl/geo/asia/3ind.htm (scroll down)

http://indiafocus.indiainfo.com/association/health/ (not all org are NGOs)

If you have an interest in a specific field or would like to work in a particular area, I'd suggest search queries on the format: NGOs India <enter filed of interest or geographic area>.

For example, here are some NGOs working in...

HIV/AIDS: http://www.google.com/search?q=ngos+india+hiv+aids

Cancer research: http://www.google.com/search?q=ngos+india+cancer

Delhi: http://www.google.com/search?q=health+ngos+delhi

Thanks for the great links. I'm checking them out as we speak. If anyone has any experience with any of these NGO's please let me know.

if you're interested in HIV/AIDS, and you are serious about spending a year, then try the Freedom Foundation. Legit and wonderful folks, I work for them in their addiction units whenever I can get the time. highly recommended! PM me if you want more info . . .

I'm very interested in working with HIV/AIDS patients. I'm actually a 2nd year medical student here in Chicago and wanted to work with a team of doctors that travels throughout India and helps the needy.
I worked on a project similar to this while I was in the Himalayas where we traveled to different sites and set up make shift clinics with a group of doctors from India, New Zealand, and the US. I'm hoping I can find something similar to this. If you or anyone else knows of any programs similar to this please let me know. Thanks all.
