My girlfriend and I going to India for 25 days. Itinerary is: Chennai - 3 days (Fly into here and stay) Pondicherry - 3 days (how to get from Chennai to here, 2 1/2 hrs drive) Tiruvannamalai - 4 days (how to get from Pondicherry here ( 4 hr drive) and then to Chennai (4 hr drive) to fly to New Delhi) Nainital - 3 days (how to get here from New Delhi (4 1/2 hr drive)) Rishikesh - 3 days (how do I get here from Nainital (4 hr drive)) Dharamsala - 5 days (how to get here from Rishikesh (7 hr drive)) Vrindavan -3 days (How do get here from Dharamsala (10 hr drive)) New Delhi to fly to Chennai to fly home (how to get to New Delhi from Vrindavan ( 2 hr drive)) We had thought of renting cars but everyone says driving in India is insane. The trains seem to be a problem Buses aren't very comfortable. Some say to hire a driver. I would really appreciate your comments and help. blessings |

In what way do you consider the trains "a problem"?

Maybe because they run off the tracks ?
Once a train was moving on the railway line. Suddenly the train got down from the railway line and started moving into the fields. The passengers got angry and decided to punish the train driver. When the train stopped, all the passengers came to the driver and asked:"Why did you take the train off the track into the fields." Driver: A man came in front and was standing on the railway line. Passengers: Why did you risk the life of so many passengers in order to save the life of one man ? You should have driven the train on that man. Driver: I was going to do this only but the man ran towards the field. |

I also wonder why trains are a problem.
Yeah, buses can be a little uncomfortable but totally doable for the really short trips. You could hire a driver if you want to spend way more money. I say hop on the train! |

Train bookings on some routes can be full months ahead of time, as rail is the best travel option for many people in terms of cost and speed. Not being the sort that likes to plan ahead, I usually end up hiring a car and driver. For those who think that this is expensive, it costs more to take a taxi to Toronto airport and back than to hire a car from Bangalore to Mysore. The train and bus cost a tenth as much, but in India it's always a balance between time and money, comfort and convenience. If you really are organized, the current competitive market in air fares is worth a look. I just scored a 2 1/2 hour flight from Bangalore to Calcutta for 30% more than the friends I am meeting there are paying to take the train - and they're going to be en route for over two days!
