Going to India this summer
Hi, my name's Rachel (duh) and I think this is by far the most helpful forum for travelling to India. I'm going this summer with a few friends and my boyfriend and no doubt I'm going to have a gazillion questions. One things that's been on my mind is the weather. We will be going to southern India from Mumbai down the coast to Goa and Kerala, over to Bangalore then up to Calcutta and back to Mumbai. We are going in August and have a very small time frame to work with (about 4 weeks) and I was just curious about monsoons....bring a rain coat or don't bother? Yeah, that's all for now!

i hope you are flying from city to city,
if you are planning to use trains your itinery will not help you enjoy india, you should have a think and talk with your friends about how much traveling is involved. a total of 6400 km, and even if you used the fastest trains it would still be a total of 124 hours on trains. thats more than 5 full days, if you include acclimatising, booking train tickets, getting to and from train stations you end up taking a big chunk out of your holliday time. i think one of the best things about india is the great atmosphere on trains and the fantastic scenery, i probibly have a far bigger percentage of my holliday time on trains than most people, but i think i couldnt do that much time in 1 month. unless you are flying, i would consider forgetting about calcutta for this trip, that would cut your distance to 3600km and hours to less than 80.

I would consider a raincoat inBombay & most of the places mentioned ; think monthly rainfall in the 200-400 mm range.
Something I also find very useful is also a very large , quick-drying towel : for rolling up cleaned clothes to make them dry up - this is close to impossible the rainer days/weeks. |

Wow! I didn't think I would get a response so quick! Thank you both for your helpful links and information. Steven- yes, we were considering flying between Calcutta and Bombay, so if we buy the tickets here (Canada), that should save a couple days of travelling/booking tickets...I hope. Your weather links were also tres handy, I will be showing them to my travelmates to make sure they are fully aware of what we are getting ourselves into. The towel is also a great idea, invaluable I'm sure! I'll be back with more queries in no time, thanks again.
