going to gurgaon
Yep! I am going to gurgaon in january for at least six months. The anticipation is killing me. I have traveled a lot but somehw India feels the most exotic of my world travels and this is the first time I have gone abroad for work. I am going to be working as a consultant, therefore, apartment, airline tickets, utilities, and 120,000r a month, health insurance, and leased car comprise the package. From what I have gathered this will more than sustain me for the duration of my stay. Anyone familiar with Gurgaon? Any tips for women living abroad in India?

Gurgaon is very near to the national capital Delhi and most of the people working in Delhi live in Gurgaon. It is a devloping city with lots of shopping malls around and Delhi is also very near by just 25 Kms is the city center, Connaught Place. The package you are getting from the company and the facilties which are availed to you are good. India have a very different culture and thus I will advise the lady to wear the sensible clothes and rest all is fine.

Passed through Gurgaon yesterday and was amazed by the development there. Make sure you live in a good area like the Garden Estate or Lebernum.

Not sure if you are already here. But here's some more info. - you can rent an apartment (2-3 bed) for anywhere between 15-30,000/month. Make sure you find one in one of the larger apartment complexes - which have backup electricity generators - the power situation in Gurgaon is terrible - you have short powercuts a couple of times a day. These complexes are also fenced with private security. Gurgaon has more malls, restaurants, movie theaters than you would care for - but for theater, music and other cultural stuff you will have to go to Delhi - most places being an hours drive. Petty street crime is common - purse/chain snatching.., but if you are going to use a car for transportation, you would never have a problem. I would definitely recommend a lot of weekend time being spent in Delhi, which has a lot more culture, parks, monuments etc.

Hi JezterBabe,
You have likely found a place by now, Gurgaon is a good choice, still a dung heap but there are good services available, for under 20,000 a month we have a great place delhi that would rent a shoe box ! I am an Aussie girl who has been living in DLF-5 Gurgaon for 2 years if you need any info I know the area pretty well, cost of living is cheap here ! but more and more luxuries are becomming available Whooo hooo ! The best butcher/ fish shop is in Galleria called Le Marche. Also in the same arcade is Gaurdini, best place for laundry/dry cleaning ($$$$) I love the Cillantro Restaurant I am headed to Australia for 3 months 12th March but can still offer my support any time best of luck |

I'm going to Gurgaon in Sept for about 2 months and I would like to know about the Crowne Plaza hotel and it's room sizes. They state the rooms are around 36 meters which would be about 108 sq ft. us. My concern is that this seems very small to live in for 2 months. I would also like to know what restaurants are in the area since all meals will need to be either in the hotel restaurant or ones in the area.

Alohaguy: Thank you so much for the correction in how I needed to read the info on the footage of the hotel. You are so correct that 324 sq.ft is plenty of space for one person.

My next question to anyone, is what types of wine to they sell in Gurgaon and where would I pick up wine?? I know the hotel will serve glasses of wine, but I would like to pick up my own to keep in my room. I don't know much about India so I need all the help I can get. I do like Indian food and eat it both at home and in a few India restaurants we have locally. I'm sure the seasoning is still mild compared to the cooking over in Gurgaon. How large a city is Gurgaon?? I have heard that they have numerous shopping malls so it would appear that it is a fairly large city, also what sight seeing spots are around Gurgaon that don't require a lot of traveling.

Don't expect anything in Gurgaon but a concrete Jungle. No Sightseeing at all, no great places to eat (only expensive restaurants serve good food), forget about local transport as well.
Regarding the wine in India, don't come with high hopes, finding good wine outside rated hotels and top restaurants would always be challenge. There are many booze shops in Gurgaon which have started to stock some good stuff, hopefully you might get come wine that you might at least recognize. And the general opinion is that wine is too expensive over here. |

You can get brands like Sula & Chantilly which are pretty good, better than some of the off the shelf European wines i have had , it partly also depends on luck with respect to what they are carrying during your visit..
