First time to India
Hi, everyone - thanks for this great site. Really appreciate all of the helpful advice and info. I'm planning a trip from Australia in October this year. Scared and excited at the same time.... I'm flying ex Brisbane to Delhi or Mumbai, then north. I'm trying to get a handle on trains from Delhi or Mumbai to closest town for me to get to Dharamsala - any ideas? thanks,

Welcome!
Delhi would be the most convenient because Dharamsala is in the north. you may wish to visit Chandigarh, Amritsar and/or Pathankot enroute to Dharamsala |

Hello Bella2003 !
Welcome to indiamike !! I suggest you land at Delhi, if its the North you plan to primarily explore. From Delhi take an overnight express train to Pathankot/Chakki Bank and then a taxi to Dharamsala(4 hours). If you have no option but to land at Mumbai, then there's a direct train - the Swaraj Express - which runs four days a week from Mumbai to Jammu Tawi and halts at Chakki Bank. However, this is a rather painful journey lasting almost 30 hours !

Wow, you people are so great - thanks - if I go Delhi to Pathankot, would I need to book a sleeper? I am not loaded up with money, but don't want to have any unnecessary discomfort for this newbie traveller!

Of course you would need a sleeper for an overnight train from Delhi to Pathankot. You can travel by Sleeper Class - its not expensive.

i don't know the exact price, but i do know that the cost of indian train trips is nothing like here in oz. i paid slightly less than two hundred dollars in total for four overnight trips on sleepers, and three day trips in coach class - all in airconditioned class. there is heaps of info on this site about train routes, how to book, how to pay. and if you can't find the answer then there is always steven_ber ![]() |
