Hello all!
I'm Dominique from SA, with a whole bunch of questions. Basically, I know nothing about India and wouldn't want any stereotypes to get in the way, so I trust someone here can help me plan a backpacking trip throughout the country. Two friends and I plan to travel to Delhi in September, and I hope to use my CELTA to be a freelance english teacher around the country for a year. I don't mind volunteering and will contact schools throughout, but need help setting up a travel itinerary, etc. Will continue to read all India info on indiamike & elsewhere... Any help/info in this regard would be most welcome, as well as just getting to know you. Thank-you! |

Welcome Dominique - Good resource, IndiaMike . . . it help to ask questions though, the more specific you can be, the more likely, I think, you'll get a response. India is a BIG place . . . "plan a backpacking trip throughout the country" is not only pretty vague/nebulous, but is something you should do, then once you decide where you're going, ask specifics.

Lots of english speakers in India, so you'll very often have to pay to volunteer somewhere, though your celta certificate will help. Many comments on those topics in the volunteering section.

The backpacker route
Thank-you for the replies, you all sound genuinely concerned with new-comers
Well, I was very vague indeed, just an ice-bracker I suppose. For the time being, it's 3 of us travelling to Delhi end Sept. We have +- 2 months to travel the north of India, but the idea is to eventually travel over to Nepal - have contacts, would like to start teaching/ volunteering from here. In India I've listed places we'd like to see in the 2 months, but of course I'm still working on how to get there & in which order... Delhi - Rishikesh - Agra - Varanasi - Kolkata - Mumbai - Rajastan - Chandigarh - (Nepal) We're simple backpackers with small budget: $10-12 (?) Not at all fussy about mode of travel, but descent accom. Any info you are able to provide is more than welcome! Moderator note: took out your link, as despite there being general general travel stuff, selling insurance seems fairly hot on the page. Ciao ![]() Last edited by Nick-H : Jun 8th, 2008 at 20:45. |
