Big Plans for India
Hi. A business partner (NRI) and I are setting up a healthcare business in India and I would like some advice as to where the best location should be. We will start in Gujarat and spread to the other megacities after that, but I want the first location to be a good one. Our current choice is Surat because of the central location b/w Mumbai and Ahmedabad and some diamond industry connections, but I have never been there--I have been to Ahmedabad and Baroda and a few other places in the region, and I liked Baroda a lot( lots of universities, museums, etc.) Since we will be employing and importing American doctors, I would like an attractive, cultural, and relatively clean place-- in other words, I don't want to send these people over to a city that is a drag to live in. I can't find much info about Surat on the web, so any thoughts on the matter would be appreciated.

Surat is nice city
Surat is a nice city to live in... not as hectic as Mumbai.
Just out of curiosity.... will you be paying the American Doctors American salaries? Or Indian salaries? This is a relevant point, even if you choose to not answer my question. US salaries will be a drain on your business. Surat people pay Surat rates, which are lower than Ahmedabad/Baroda rates; which in turn are lower than Mumbai rates, coz many of my Mumbai ppl choose to get operated in Surat/Ahd/Baroda. Indian salaries may not attract the US docs. Have you factored this in your projections?

At first we are importing American Docs and paying accordingly. Within the near future, however, this will change. We have run projections at different rate schedules (Mumbai vs. Ahmedabad, etc) and are fairly content with the Surat prices. I know we could charge more in Mumbai but it would also be more expensive/hectic to live there. Where would you say is the best mix of features (best quality of life) in that area? I want a balance between a lot of different things, i know...

Define quality of life
What would you mean by quality of life? Discos? Pubs? Drama? Western Classical musical performances?
Could you elaborate? |

Am from the Pharma Retail sector and am not so upbeat about your choice of Surat to start with.
I would rather choose a place which is close to a Megapolis where there are lots of New Corporates & young families, maybe with Medical Insurance covers, and who can pay that kind of fees, viz. Gurgaon or Noida near Delhi, or Hyderabad/Secunderabad, Bangalore. Just rich people doesnt mean they'll go to costly Hospitals. If you are planning to start a chain of Hospitals you need top be in a place where people have started accepting the concept of a corporate Hospital. |
