Hi 'World-refugee', you'll like this site, good to see you on here. It covers just about everything, I know because I've asked just about every kind of question at one time or another.

Welcome, World Refugee! And yes, I'm sure you'll find something on Bangladesh if you go to 'Crossing the Borders' Forum.

OK... to answer as best I can:
- Permanent residence may be near impossible to obtain for a foreigner. If you were to have a job there, you may be able to get a long-term visa but that would be the extent of things.

- Employment for an unskilled person would again be near impossible. You have many people who live on less than US$1 per day in the outer regions of the country and, at the ship wrecking yards. Unemployment numbers are quite high and for you to get a job as a labourer, office worker, builder, etc. would again be near impossible.

You would need to have a job provided by a company before you went there to work. If you tried to obtain a job with a tourist visa, you'd be out of the country quickly.

- U.S. citizens excepted, the visas are generally very short. Ones for Aussies are only 30 days. I believe that trade agreements between the US & Bangladesh sweetened visas for people from the U.S. who can get much longer stays.

- Rentals would vary depending on where you want to live - if it's in Dhaka central, you could rent a hotel room (small but comfortable) for US$6 per night. Further out, the prices drop.

But at the end of the day, if you want to live there long term, are not a US citizen, have no job, I'd say that you're looking at only getting tourist visas for around 1 month and you'd have no chance of getting long term residency.

Cheers
