A Sandwich Writes

Hello.

I'm That Man Sandwich. I must admit that it's not my real name but it will do for now. Let me tell you a little about myself.

I do a boring office job in the north east of England. This mostly involves working under the sort of people who think that 'action' is a verb and believe that saying 'going forwards' makes them cutting-edge visionaries of project management rather than tedious drones bereft of original thought.

Given the circumstances I've decided to take the only sensible option available - I'm going to run away to India. The flights are booked, the jabs are ongoing and I'm already working hard on failing to allocate proper time to learn enough Hindi to get by without embarrassing myself.

Before I race to the airport I'm obliged to attend a wedding in late September. As the wedding is my own then it would be a little rude not to turn up. Equally, as my future wife is running away to India with me, my absence from our impending nuptials may make for awkward conversation on our flight. Oh, there's also the fact that I'm also looking forward to it.

We arrive in Delhi on October the 5th with a sparse budget and a sparser itinerary. As it stands, we're going to spend a few days mooching around in Delhi acclimatising, panic buying essential items we've forgotten and working out if sparser is definitely a real word. Then we expect to take the train to Jaipur where we hope to do some work in exchange for food and accommodation for a little while.

After that? Well, I suppose that the world is our lobster. We'll be playing it by ear, looking for good opportunities as they arise and making plans as and when they need to be made. We'll be staying until either the money runs out or the visa runs out and then we'll be plotting to run away again as soon as possible. In the meantime we hope to have a lot of fun, have some excellent experiences, meet some great people and avoid treading in too much cow shit.

I've been an occasional lurker on the India Mike website since a botched project a couple of years ago involving an apartment in Goa and about a million hands of online poker. I must admit that the resources on IM are far more impressive than my card skills and I'm looking forward to using the site more as I familiarise myself with all things India. Thanks to all for providing so much good quality information.

It's always nice to hear from a sandwich. Welcome to IndiaMike!

Congratulations to you and your fiancee. How nice to start your new lives together with a trip to India! You have a great sense of humor, and that will serve you well on your trip.

I'm not sure if you're kidding or not, but I don't think the plan of working for food in Jaipur will work out. There are too many people in India already who need jobs. If I'm wrong, I'm sure someone will come along and let you know that your plan is feasible.

Anyway, we're glad you're here! And that's a great name!

mmmmmmmmmm ... sandwich .......

I've always thought there would be a "market" for helping students improve their English speaking and writing skills. Yes, I know that they already speak English. But I had a fine graduate student who kept getting turned down for a job in the USA because his "Indian accent" was too strong. I tutored him in pronunciation and business etiquette. Maybe you could find a successful business person whose overachieving kids need tutoring? Probably violates every India visa law on the books ... ...

Good luck!
