Smile 1st trip - 5 weeks in Mumbai on business

Hello IM'ers!

I've been lurking for a week or so but, as my departure date is only 10 days way, felt it was time I made my presence known.

My employer (Large American MNC) is sending me to Mumbai for 5 weeks to train a group of Indian associates. I must admit to looking forward to the deluxe accomodations the company is providing - Business class flight, 5 star hotel, butler, driver, $25US/day for meals, etc. (I know... Boo Hoo! Poor Matthew!).

The odd schedule I'll be working (US hours) should allow me to see a bit of the town each day. On the weekends (Actually Sat am - Mon pm) I hope to take a few longer treks outside of Mumbai proper.

The wife is very jealous (she is an anthropology, textile and costume junkie) and is insisting that the bonus $$ I'm getting for going be either spent on presents for her or be put towards a return trip for the two of us!

Previous travel experience is limited to Western Eurpoe and Mexico. Tijuana can be "interesting", but I get the impression that India is in a whole other league! One of the most valuable tidbits I've gleaned from this great site is that nobody is ever fully prepared for their first experience in India. So, off I go to face the unknown! Woohooo!!!

-Matthew

Matthew, Welcome to IM, and Congrats in advance for India trip.

Usually your business associates in India will have a very good idea of what's near Bombay, so for local trips you may want their advice. There is also a lot of material on this website about Bombay. Also, this thread has some more info : Weekend Trips from Mumbai

Enjoy your trip.

Do you actually intend to do a bit of "trekking" or "backpacking"? from Mumbai? (Or was it a mere turn of phrase?) If yes to actual "trekking", PM me.... i'm in Mumbai & go out practically every weekend in winter.

If you just wanna "tour" the countryside, then your business associates will help you in EVERY way.... most probably do everything/arrange everything "on the house" !!! HAVE FUN but dont make your wife jealous!
