I've used Nytol and Valium (err...on separate occasions I mean), and of the two I recommend Nytol. It's an antihistamine, so check your contraindications first. Clean knock out, clean wake up. If you're sleeping when you wouldn't naturally sleep, however, it can feel artificial and chemically when you wake up. I can't explain it better than that.
Pretty serious dehydration also knocked me out for a good 4 hours on a flight back once, but the attendant muscle cramps and headache don't make it a good option. ![]() As long as you're informed about the DVT risks it's your call. EDIT: And, with apologies to Samuel L Jackson, I just have to say: I have had it with this *********** sleeping on a *********** plane! ![]()

DVT is a no joke, so be sure to get up often and do some stretching. Here's what I do on any flight over 6 hours (overnight) - I drink TONS (like, liters of water) and take a Unisom (over the counter sleep aid). It knocks me out, but "nature's call" wakes me at least once and hour or two. I get up, go to the loo and stretch. Drink more water. Repeat until you reach your destination
Just be sure to avoid alcohol and beverages with caffeine as they will dehydrate you. Happy trails! -C |

On a positive note, check out medical advice around taking aspirin to prevent deep vein thrombosis. Lots of stuff on the web about this.

I've done the trip from Toronto to India twice and this is what works for me:
Choose the leg of the flight that's closest to night time in India and try to sleep right through it. I'll even adjust my sleeping at home by a few hours for a few days beforehand. Then when I get on the plane I ask the flight attendants not to disturb me, put on my noise-canceling headphones, take half a lorazepam and sleep for 6-7 hours. |

Hey Yogi Collin - in the states I found a great NATURAL sleeping aid - it's completely herbal - just keeps you sleepy enough to move around and then go back to sleep - and if you had to wake up in a hell of a hurry you can.(depending on what you get , you can always just take half of one)
The other thing I also recommend is squishy foam ear plugs - NEVER TRAVEL WITHOUT THEM! they help reduce that horrible drone noise from the plane and what's going on around you - where them under your head phones - and put on some relaxing music.(actually once in the air I only take them out when someone is talking to me) I always carry a little bag with me - full of anything I might need - extra ear plugs - moisturizer - wet wipes - inflatable neck pillow - panadol / asprin - indigestion tablets etc etc - I think you get the general Idea. Anything that will make my trip more comfortable and wouldn't be able to get once in the air. I put it in the seat pocket before taking off so I'm all set to go. Hope this is of some help. Have a great trip.

A Mere Suggestion for fun sake - try some weed, it has been helping people relax and when you relax and listen to some music on the go you might fall asleep.
Well im not sure if this is a good idea...hehe For me - I feel sleepy inside anything that moves me ! |
