Smile London to Delhi

Hi I am new to this site. My husband and I are travelling from London to Delhi in Oct for 3 days. What airlines would you reccommend - Virgin or BA for direct flight? Would you go world traveller plus or club on BA or Virgin premium or upper. Husband has bad back and is 6'2 so thinking of upgrading for him - I am 5'2 so have no issue with this area. Thanks alot!!! Air India and Jet also fly direct.

Air India particularly will give you a taste of what India's like before you arrive, though this isn't always a good thing...

I would take Virgin's premium and upper over a comparable BA product. To upgrade from Economy to Upper on VS is about 60,000 miles. You can easily do it by booking online, and, if I am not mistaken, 3 days before ask for an upgrade. I have not done this segment on Virgin Atlantic. I am sure BA has similar miles plus a certain fare-bucket that is upgradable.

Upgrades on certain dates in October might not be available due to upcoming Diwali season. However, people with certain status on the airline can override those dates. Virgin typically charges between 250GBP to 500GBP for non-mileage upgrade. Is that what you had in mind ?

Karebear, there isn't much difference spacewise between Virgin premium, BA traveller plus and Coach/Economy. The main difference between these classes is the service. So I'd rather suggest Club or upper. It's your choice whatever airline has the better tariff.

Or else, as Haylo suggested, there is also Air India. In Business Class your husband would get a taste of some very self important Babus.

As you are only going for three days, presumably you will not need to take much with you, and won't want delays waiting for baggage, so will not be checking any baggage. If that's the case, BA is definitely the one to go for.

Virgin's carryon allowance is a paltry one item weighing not more than 6kg!

BA on the other hand has a far more generous allowance of one bag of a standard max size of 56cm x 45cm x 25cm (22ins x 18ins x 10ins) with unlimited weight, PLUS a laptop bag / briefcase.

Are you actually spending 3 full days & nights in Delhi--a 5 day trip (a day to get there & a day to get home)-- or are you flying there one day, spending one day there, flying home on the 3rd day?

I know it doesn't take a whole day to get from London to Delhi & back but it seems like an expensive & long way to go for such a very short time.

Or are you in transit to somewhere else? We spent 3 days in Singapore in transit to Sri Lanka & wished we had more time!

Thanks so much for all the info!!! I think the hand baggage limit on virgin has decided for us!! We will only be hand carryig with us so def ba seems to be more lenient than virgin according to Haylo (thanks). This has been a huge help!!! Camelgirl - I know I wish we were going for longer. We are only going 3 days (including travel days) as we are looking into surrogacy in India and have to go meet with clinic so it will be a flying trip but hopefully if all goes well we will be going back for few weeks!! I am sure I will be on again for more questions Thanks again everybody!!!

Good Luck Karebear. Now I understand! I didn't mean to pry, I wrongly assumed you were going to see tourist things!

Hope it goes well!
