LAX to Moscow to Mumbai; Transit Visa needed for Russia?
I may have made a huge mistake as I can not seem to find the correct answer.
On December 17, we are flying to Mumbai via Moscow from LAX on Aeroflot. We have our Indian visa but I do not have a Russian transit visa. Some websites say I need one while others say it is not needed since I am only passing through and not leaving the airport. Does anyone have any info on this? Thanks, Gordon |

I'd call Aeroflot and your appropriate embassies or ministry of foreign affairs about it.
To my knowledge, no, as you won't be leaving the airport or even the transit area (you'd need one to do so, i.e., wanting to visit the city on a longer layover). But I can't speak for US citizens, nor about today's precise stipulations. As a word of comfort, as far as I know none of this is normally required for transiting anywhere. It would hamper passenger and hence economic flows, you know. But best to check to make sure.

The Russian Embassy in London quotes :-
If you are going to transit via Russia to any other country you need a Transit Visa. However, a Transit Visa is not required if you remain in the transit zone of the airport in order to catch an onward or connecting flight within 24 hours of arrival. I would check the Russian Embassy in the US. Dave

Thank you all who applied. I have contacted Aerpflot and the embassy, both said I do not need one as long as I do not leave the airport. I read a post yesterday were a guy showed up at the airport without a visafor India and was upset with Jet Airways for not letting him board and getting him refund, which got me started thinking about Russia.

Hm yes, different case though. You can't enter India without a visa and you can't get a visa on entry, so I'm not surprised if the airline won't take you without one, knowing they'll have to fly you straight back. Sounds like a rather silly story all in all. Some folks...
