Thanks for all your responses.

Passionfruit: I like the idea of just having one bag! I can see why you like it.

nycank: Yes my return route was definitely a bit round about. But as it was the holiday season, flights were in high demand. The Delhi to Brussels flight was sold out so my options were: pay for 1st class (not an option), come home alot earlier or later (no thanks), fly first to Chennai, or pay alot more with a different airline. Flying Delhi-Chennai-Brussels was no more expensive than just going from Delhi to Brussels so I figured why not? With the 3 hour stopover in Chennai, I figured I could do a bit of airport shopping. Ha. Not a chance. All the time was eaten up by standing in one endless line after the next. So even with "all that extra time", I barely made it on the flight 15 minutes before it was scheduled to leave and that was with the help of some fellow travellers who helped me butt in line 3 times.

Aishah: You can take toothpaste and other toiletry items as long as each one is not more than 100mL. They were very thorough in checking this in Toronto. But I have to say very lax in Chennai. No questions asked. And I even had a big 2L bottle of water in my hand (!) which I figured I would just throw out if it was a problem but no one said a thing. In Brussels however, I mistakenly put one of the teeny bottles of water that they give you on flights in my bag and 2 people checked my bag and made me get rid of it.

mridula: Thanks for asking. No progress. Called the JA head office in Toronto. I just get voicemail. Can't even reach a receptionist! Last night I spoke to someone at the JA baggage service at the Toronto Airport. He was the first person to apologize and seemed to know what he was doing. He PROMISED to call me back with an update before 12 today. It's now 2:30 and surprise surprise, no word from him. Will follow up with some of the suggestions from yesterday.

Hans. Thank you. What is a Property Irregularity Report? Do you mean the report that I filled in with Jet Airways at the airport?

Good luck Ariell with your next campaign. Suggestions re keeping receipts - I never keep receipts for anything I buy unless it is under warranty or guarantee. clothes - nothing kept there. Makes it all very difficult doesn't it?

Aishah: Thanks. I managed to speak to the General Manager at the head office in Toronto who put me in touch with a JA rep in baggage services. (Thanks very much for the contact info. in India Patrick. But I decided I would try the office here in Canada before spending more $$ with this business). As requested, I sent off a detailed email itemizing the contents of my bag. But I am done being Mrs. Nice. I contacted the Canada Transportation Agency - Air Travel Complaints Program and discussed the matter with them. I told Jet Airways that if they failed to respond within 5 business days that I would be lodging a formal complaint against them through CTA. CTA posts the results of their decisions on their website and seems like they mean business!

It seems you and I have similar styles -- no travel insurance and no receipts! I also never keep receipts unless it's for a warranty. I can't be bothered keeping track of so many bits.

Yes. It's standarised, so they can put the info in the world wide lost luggage system.

One possibility then is to just take a few photos of the luggage while packing - in all its messy glory. Not sure if it is legally valid as proof of items lost -- i would think it is more valid than receipts actually. If you have a digital camera, quite easy to just snap away when everything is spread all over the floor waiting to be put in luggage.

Receipts required is a commonly used method of delaying or attempting to sidestep claims.

Quite a number of people are still travelling Rajasthan in March however. With only 10 days though I suggest you do one or the other place because I don't think enough time for both.
Back to topic - I reckon that's a great tip for travelling, Passion Fruit re take on board. The other thing is when I get to Sydney, 2 days later I'm off to NZ which doesn't leave a lot of time to retrieve my luggage if it's lost! So for sure, I'm having that extra set of clothes in the cabin of plane with me!
Hi Aisha - thanks for the tip. With only 10 days i think i will stay around the North this time possibly...rhododendrons sounds nice....i guess it's quite cold there. Yep - the "one bag as hand-luggage" concept beats all! Make sure though it's not too heavy otherwise they might tell you check in your luggage. Remember - you rarely use all the stuff you packed - and who wants to carry around 8 pairs of dirty underwear- that's a lot of wasted space !!

Hi Ariell! No probs.

I'll make a little prayer for you tonight and hope the bag will eventually be returned to its rightful owner. Suitcases can be lost for long - but normally they turn up at some point. It's rare that they are stolen - i've always got them back.

Indeed! I am mad for music: Hindustani, Carnatic, Baroque, World, Medieval... I'm lucky that rasika is a subset of letters from my name Saraswati, which *also* has musical connotations.

And I am hoping to find some live music during my upcoming trip to Rajasthan and Delhi - but haven't found info yet. If only I could be in India for the Dhrupad festival in Varanasi... my dream is to be there, some year.

[I guess this is an intro message from me: Hello group!]

Great tip,(camera photo of luggage), Rasika. As Nick says I also think stalling off technique. Who wants to keep reciepts for all your socks and underwear, for goodness sakes!!!
OT - Rasika check out music threads here, post one of your own re music, concerts etc. Wonderful folk music all over Rajasthan - Desert Festival here on Feb.21 has a fantastic display of Rajasthani music and dance out at Sam in the moonlight and extra generated floodlights. Concerts in Delhi regularly at Habitat Centre and Indian.. something (name escapes me, they are listed daily in the newspapers in entertainment column).Haven't been there but Varanasi would have to be humming with music, also Chennai.

Rasika... You can always start your own introduction in the Introduce Yourself forum and tell us more about your interests. It's nice to see another music lover on the site

Ask them where it says in writing that a passenger must have receipts, on their ticket or terms of service.

I did, and they backed off.
