Thanks Mickey. But unfortunately, I didn't have any travel insurance.
I've always got it in the past but didn't get it this time, only medical. I did try to purchase it but was unable to because I paid for my ticket in October then tried to purchase the travel insurance in December. I tried 2 places and they both required that you buy the insurance within 3 days of making your final payment but I had no idea about this til December. So I just decided to go without. I figured, 'well, I've never had a problem before and I'm just going for such a short time, what are the chances?' and to be honest, I thought I would save a bit of $$ also. So going through Jet Airways is my only option. |

A long route
I was wondering a bit... Why did you fly DEL-MAA-BRU-YYZ ? Would it not have been convenient to fly from Delhi to Brussels and change there for Pearsons International ?

Ariell - I too don't normally have travel insurance. After reading this, think maybe not a bad idea? BUT it will be Indian travel insurance because I'm getting my tickets in Jodhpur (already booked) when I reach there towards the end of this month. So Captain, Nick, Mairangi vice... what are the chances of getting reimbursed through an Indian Travel Insurance? Reliable and good?

Hi Ariell,
You are indeed patient. I would have thrown a fit about 24 hours later if not receiving my baggage. By the way - i am used to having my luggage lost - and i am not even a super frequent traveler. My luggage invariably gets lost especially on long haul flights!! I think a total of about 7 times in my life time up to now. Last time i had to wait 3 days before i got my luggage and that was a European flight Manchester - Brussels. I experienced the same nil customer support when calling the stupid "customer service" with automated reply and no news. Incredibly frustrating - but if its of any consolation the customer service at Brussesl airport was just as lousy as Jet Airways. As a little tip - especially for leisure travel in India. I now only use a small-medium sized rucksack and pack only in such a way that i can take my luggage with me on the plane i.e. as handlunggage. I have noticed that this is way more comfortable as i just take a few clothes with me and wash the stuff while i'm there - give it to the dhobi wallahs and underwear can easily be hand washed. Another plus is that I feel so much more liberated traveling with a small handy bag, rather than looking like one is going on a major expedition. |

But i find this idea difficult, Passion Fruit. I can't take my knitting or embroidery on board, nor toiletry items, creams etc. I think are also banned. I guess a small bag with a set of clothes however is not a bad idea in case you get stuck. Can you take toothpaste?

Hi Aishah,
oh...i try to accommodate as much as possible. I don't knit, so don' thave that problem...and books are allowed . Re. toiletries, i don't take big bottles of cream or even sun lotion with - i tend to buy them when in India in those small shops that you have everywhere...they have these lovely aloe vera creams in very small pots. Also, instead i take with me the small hotel give-away bottles of shampoo, conditioner, and a small hard soap instead of liquid soap. I never got stopped with toothpaste though....i do take some risks, but yes, maybe London is more tricky when doing the security check... |

Thanks Passion fruit - you've given me some ideas for when I go back to Oz and NZ - I have this small wheelie rucksack where the clothes can go in and the soap and toothpaste etc. I'm going to do this!

However, one of the main reasons for pushing for a high daily compensation from the airline is to motivate them to find your luggage in the first place. So, I would go to the airline first, and second, anyway.

Hi Aishah,
I can guarantee you, once you start you won't go back. Especially if you are intending to travel around a lot you will wonder what on earth you have been packing all those years before.... I see you live in Jaisalmer! Is it nice there in March? I am coming to India for 10 days in March....but having a tough time deciding where i should go. Rajasthan is one of my favourites but am thinking whether i should try and give North India a chance!! |

March in Rajasthan is doable but it is starting to warm up, but not nearly as hot as April. They say the mountains are lovely in March with rhododendrons etc. out - wrong thread at the moment but I suggest you look in Himachel or Uttarakhand forums! Quite a number of people are still travelling Rajasthan in March however. With only 10 days though I suggest you do one or the other place because I don't think enough time for both.
Back to topic - I reckon that's a great tip for travelling, Passion Fruit re take on board. The other thing is when I get to Sydney, 2 days later I'm off to NZ which doesn't leave a lot of time to retrieve my luggage if it's lost! So for sure, I'm having that extra set of clothes in the cabin of plane with me! |

By IATA and EU rules you are entitled to compensation, in case of loss or damage of luggage, but it is limited.
You are also entitled to compensation in the case of delay, but here the situation becomes fuzzy. Keep all the receipts of stuff that you buy and make a claim at the airline. Some airlines will give you an advance, but most will not do this in your home-country (you are supposed to have stuff at home). What did we get: BA; permanent loss of 1 backpack in Delhi. € 150,00 in Delhi straight away and 550 € when it did not turn up. We got the rest of the value from the insurance company. This was the holiday that we decided we would always split up our luggage and not put the ladies stuff in one and the guys stuff in the other SIA; toiletries en some essentiels in a nice bag (in SIN) the bag got delevered one day later. SIA; bag delivery two days later and a flower coupon as an excuse. BA; we had to make a lot of phonecalls to get our luggage 5 days later when it arrived allready one day late in Brussels. AF; don't mention it. Chances are pretty high that when you fly via Heathrow or Paris (CDG) with a connection of less then three hours, your luggage will end up delayed. Frankfurt and Munich are pretty organised, even with short connections. Golden rule 1: make sure you have a PIR (Property Irregularity Report)before you leave the airfield. Golden rule 2: allways ask for compensation and ask them to put it in writing i they don't want to give it. Golden rule 3: make sure you have travel insurance. Hans

Thanks. I did a quick look around and seems the email format is XXX. The Jet Airways site lists all of their Senior Management people and their Board of Directors. XXX. Which ones should I send to?? Both?? And which ones within that? All of them??"India's finest international airline" indeed! What a joke. If they expect to compete internationally they will really need to improve their horrid customer service skills. ![]() Moderator note: X'ed out some details. The story is clear enough without them, and this site cannot be responsible for some spam run on the company involved. Last edited by machadinha : Jan 15th, 2008 at 01:43. Reason: removed details |
