India to/from Central Asia

Does anyone know of any routes from India to/from Central Asia, more precisely to/from Bishkek/Tashkent/Almaty. Presumely they'll be easier through Delhi.

I'm looking to combine a 3 week trip in Central Asia with a stint working in Bangalore. Hopefully it'll work out easier/cheaper to go direct from India rather than returning to London in between.

So far, Turkish Airlines has the route (from Mumbai) but very expensive.

in Winter from 2006/2007 I flew from Birmingham UK to Amritsar via Tashkent and my daughter flew to India (Delhi in, Amritsar out) via Dushanbe, Tajikistan when taking a friend to see the DL. So try Tajik Air or Uzbekistan Airways.

Beware, Tashkent is like a Brezhnev Era theme park, but dig those security police, zombies in crombies.

The other option is to fly to M.E. (read UAE and then India)...

You could get to Bishkek overland via Pakistan and Kashgar, a wonderful trip.

Non-stop From TAS (Tashkent) to DEL on HY (Uzbekistan Airways) Twice a week.
Non-Stop from ALA to DEL on KC (Air Astana) Twice a week. Turkish also flies from DEL twice/thrice a week.
Cannot tell you about fares in absence of approx dates; but expect to pay about 400USD round-trip (consolidator fares might be cheaper)

Shiver - can you tell me about this overland trip? You went north through that little slice of Pakistan then cut east towards Kashgar? I assume you'll need visas for all these places despite the shortness of the stint in either place.

I get the impression there is rail service from Delhi to Lahore to Peshawar to Kashgar...

Anyone ever ridden it?

Sorry Asin, I haven't done this trip, I only made it as far as the Pakistan/Chinese border.

There is no rail service from Pakistan to China. From Islamabad the Karakorum Highway goes all the way to Kashgar, plenty of buses ply the route, it's a spectacular part of the world.

Yes, Shiver. You're right. I must have misinterepreted something.

What about the safety issue? The travel advisories are pretty strong right now. But I've traveled in place that had advisories like that and at ground level, life is just going on.

I won't be in that part of the world until next year so I'll keep my eyes on the reports, advisories and forums.
