Transiting through Europe has become a hassle after the 9/11, now there are couple of direct flights from USA to India, in the future they might even have a direct flight to Chennai.

Eve,

Last time I flew BA, I had 120 mins between flights at Heathrow and made it through ok.

When you check-in in the US, make sure that BA books your luggage all the way through. Also, they will put an extra Tag on your luggage (Short Transit or something like that)

There is a bus that connects the terminals. Make sure you do not miss the first bus.

You will have to go through security and the next departure terminals. BA is good at pulling people out of the long lines if their flights are boarding. Pay attention to the announcements.

From which terminals did you have to transfer? I'm worried because I only have 85 minutes and I don't think that's counting the security check. The map says it's 90 just to get from one terminal to another. How big IS this airport?

I hesitate to say it is Big --- because when Brits tell Americans that something is 'big', it tends to be that USA has something that makes our 'big' insignificant!!!

But it is, I believe, one of the world's busiest airports.

Terminal 4 is to the South of the airport, the other terminals are to the north. But the airport has its own road system and I don't see why it should take longer than 15 minutes to get from one terminal to another! When I left a car in one of the Northern car parks, I don't remember the car park pus taking very long between the terminals. Maybe even 10 minutes...

The time will be in the aforementioned legwork!

I know tihs thread is a tad dusty/foosty lol, but I thought it easier to resurrect one rather than open anew. I was just wondering if anyone had recent experiences of doing the flight connection/follow the purple lit road la la la, from Terminal 5 domestic to T5 long-haul? I'm thinking specifically a morning domestic flight with 1hr connection onto the morning Madras flight? return it is 100mins so not so tight. And pardon my ignorance, never having done long-haul before, & I'm 39:$ but with it being a BA connection, does that class as a through ticket/baggage? Ta very mooch for replies x

T5 is T5... I've only used it to fly Heathrow/Chennai, nothing domestic, but I'm sure it is only one building.

Having said that, it is huge. So big, that they lay on a train to get to some of the gates --- but the journey is only about one minute.

I would have thought that BA would route your baggage, and that you would not have to collect it and check in again. One hour would not be nearly enough time to do that; they say allow three hours to check in for a long-haul flight, although this can be reduced if you check in online.

Hint: do check in onlne, 24 hours prior to flight. You can change your seat, and it makes the stuff at the airport quicker and simpler; you print your own boarding pass and take it with you.

Heathrow T5 is, despite its bad start, pretty-well organised.

Hello Nick & Namaste to Chennai and Tamil Nadu.
I was asking because reading the BA & BAA websites about T5 they talk about the "flight connections", the route following the purple signs in T5 which lead from Zone A(domestic) to Zone B(international), you may have seen the signage the last time you were returning to MAA? But the sticky thing for me is that the only flight from Glasgow to connect with the Madras flight arrives with 60mins to spare. I'm really just on a fishing expedition regarding folk who travel from the nations and regions(to quote the BBC) out to India, via T5.

Interesting... the BAA site says you need 60 minutes, which is what you have got

If you booked Glasgow --> Chennai with BA, then I'm sure your baggage will be booked through. Just follow that purple path! If not... better ask BA!

To be clear, you are "in-transit" the whole time, constantly moving along. The underground shuttle train which shoots you into 5B is around 45 secs, & you can see videos on youtube lol. I just thought it sounded absolutely wonderful, book right through, then the night before do the online check-in, and away I go. Just go to one of the Passport and Visa Check desks before going to Security.

Frequent, and very frequent flyers hang out in flyertalk.com, some do at airliners.net. They tend to do have more indepth information than many here. Browse or search their archives. If your ticket is on the same PNR (i.e Glasgow to Madras/Chennai) then official connect time is what you have between flights.

The only caveat, I do not know what procedure they follow UK/Scotland with regards to visa verification. If the airline (BA) checks if you have a valid visa @ GLA, and then @LHR they do another, then it might add a delay. Again; I have only once arrived at T5 as a final destination, so I do not know about in-transit situation.

BTW: The LHR-MAA BA35, once daily flies @ 13:25. I suggest you shift to a
GLA-LHR BA1477 that arrives @ LHR 1040AM. This gives you some extra time.

I think 60 minutes is going to be tight. I suppose if there's no other option, then cross your fingers, and it may work out fine. But you have to go through security again, even if you don't leave the airport, so there are lines.
many lines.
and shoes to take off.
and trains to catch.
and 40 escalators up and then 36 down.
(ok, I am not a big fan of Heathrow. Maybe the shops are good.)

I suspect they handle transfers better than that. I remember seeing signs saying something like "If you are transferring to one of the following flights, panic". Or maybe it was "contact staff" .

If it was not from the same terminal I'd say to add three buses to chAos's lifts and escalators --- but within the same terminal, I think it might be doable. I'd check with BA.

Ahhh... BA35 --- makes me feel homesick!

Oh! I am at home!

Nick wil correct me if I am wrong, but from what I have been reading online, the Madras flight leaves LHR at 09.35 (BA0035) arriving Madras(sorry, Chennai)MAA at 01.00 India time.
I have been reading both www.flyertalk.com & www.airliners.net and the only Scottish transfers were 1 person who was transfering onto a carribean flight, another to the Americas, hence why I was enquiring in an India forum for an India flight: transfering from BA to BA with a British Passprt and native resident.
They do check your documents before you go through security before departures at T5A, esp if you are only travelling with hand luggage, but it is a different section to the regular passport/security area.
As I say, I only asked as a fishing exercise to find out if folk have actually done this after nearly 18 months of T5 A&B opening.
From doing a lot of research online and watching video and 3D walk-throughs, it appears achievable just wanted a first hand account though lol. Thanks to everyone!

They change the times of the Chennai flights fairly regularly. I suppose I don't fly that regularly, but it always seems a different time to me!
