Going by ship to India

Hello,
I would like to know if it is possible to go by Ship to India from England. I bet there won't be any direct services in this age but well I would love to try it out. I plan to go sometime in August or September. Possible?. How do i go about it?.

Thanks

It is still possible on freight ships but it is pretty expensive. Just looked up Felixstowe to Mumbai with Strand Travel and they quote 2,285 pounds for the 22 day trip. If you want to look into the freighter passenger option you could try these links:

Bon voyage!

passenger ship i was told sails between ports on south west coast to east coast of africa. I enquired about this 2 weeks ago in karwar and was told it was possible with 1 day prior booking and aprox under 6000 rps one way if i remember correctly but have no other details. Either mangalore or cochin i think but perhaps even mumbai probably. Will take extensive research outside of india though, best to ring kenyan travel agents perhaps.

Be aware of piracy off Somalia in the unlikely event that the India Kenya trip materialises. You will have to pass the southernmost tip of the war zone- or a little more than the tip.

2008 statistics

(Based on reported events, actual figs will be higher)

Well over 100 ships attacked
40 odd hijacked (around a dozen are still held for ransom with approx 150-200 crew)
Approx 25/30 mariners killed. (34 worldwide in such attacks)
Worst year of hijackings since records started in 1992
Average time held until ransomed 2 to 3 months

This year should be better, though, with the new Somali government.
