From what I have read here it seems that the following would likely be true:
1) Fog at Delhi airport would be unlikely for flights in the range of Nov. 26 - 30, 2009 (or really any year).
2) The airport has a new lighting system and so even when there is fog, at least for some arriving flights the ability to land is probably improved; and probably delays for arrivals are somewhat less in comparison to delays for departures.
3) Fog would be at least moderately likely for departures on or about Jan. 4, 2010.
4) If Delhi is like many other airports then fog is more likely to impact the ability to land than the ability to take off. (But this is India, and this is indiamike and so one can afford to assume that India is probably not like any other place or airport in the world!)

So nice to be back on the forum - last time was 20 months when I was helping my college aged son plan his 1st trip to India. He just invited me to join him for part of his next trip and I'm so excited. I haven't been in India since 1989 and I'm overdue.

Here are my replies:
1. No fog in most instances.
2. CAT-IIIb: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Instrum...S_ categories
3. Possibly. Expect trouble 4-5am onwards till 11am
4. Not really. IME affects landing much more. Atleast takeoffs are sure to happen by 10-11am come what may - landing is a nuisance is the flight is taken to Jaipur or Lucknow or some other station, or hovers around for long.

But overall, chill man. Things shouldn't be so bad

If it is an international flight, it does not matter fog,or rain. All pilots are trained and certified for CAT III-B. It was that in the past, pilots for all domestic except Indian Airlines (IC) were not certified or trained for CAT III-B, hence the cancellations into and out of DEL.

I do not know it it is still true.

Note that if you are travelling around India and have to get to or from Delhi to fly home, fog may very well affect your rail trip to Delhi, so give yourself an extra day. My train from Delhi to Kolkata was delayed for 6 hours ...

Edor, I'm not sure I follow, or to take offence.

Even if India were to be a wild wild west, a Timbuctu - fog operations necessitate CAT IIIb operations. Its as simple as saying snow tires for northern altitudes.

Talking about western/modernization is frankly condescending and unwelcome imo.

Very unlikely in November, but probable in Jan, the Delhi fog.

It was definitely not my hope or intention to offend or be condescending, so my apology. I have removed that part of my earlier post. I thoroughly enjoy both this forum and the time and learnings I have had from visiting India several times. Appreciate your balanced way of pointing things out. Hopefuly enough said.
