got a better deal from Punjab Travel in San Jose, as they book China Airlines, which doesn't charge for stopover in BKK.

Nice to hear it worked out, Bij, I'm still a believer in 'brick and mortar' shops as the way to go so glad you have found us a good Bay area connection!

UK to India

Olympic Holidays have some good deals on return flights, for a maximum of 22 nights, UK to Goa. www.olympicholidays.co.uk

If you're leaving soon, they are charging £295.55 including all taxes.

Swiss Air also have some good deals to Mumbai - £316.00 return from Manchester (but pick your days because if you are one day out, this rises to £698.00!). www.swiss.com

Bangkok-Calcutta air fare help

I've been looking for a Bangkok-Calcutta-Bangkok round trip, leaving early February and returning late March (I already have my Boston-Bangkok flight booked), and it's proven hard by Internet to find even simple information, much less get a ticket.

I remember fares used to be $200, and recently I saw fares for $250 with Biman-Bangladesh and Indian Airlines (don't remember where), but different web sites give you different info.

Only one Bangkok agency replied, out of 7 or 8 Thai, Indian, and American I wrote e-mails to. They say:

Sawasdee etc. etc. land of smiles etc. etc.
Routing: Bangkok-Kolkata-Bangkok
Type of ticket: Round trip
Airfare: THB 13,900 per person
Airlines: Indian Airlines (IC)
Ticket Validity: 3months
Ticket Conditions: Able to change travel date free of charge / NonRefundable.

Thats' $348 US, after correction for 2% exchange surcharge, or $358 US if I use my Visa card and the travel agency slaps their 3% surcharge. Plus I'd have to have them delivered to a friend in Bangkok, or else I'd be slapped with an extra FedEx fee. Sounds like too much, doesn't it?

The Indian Airlines web site does not allow you to book international flights, only domestic flights. Is there some other way?

My biggest dilemma right now is: should I wait until I am in Bangkok and book then because it will be cheaper? Will all February flights be booked by January?

Go to any Indian travel agent in Boston who is an authorized agent for Air India and he will be able to sell you tickets for Indian Airlines flights on any route operated by Indian Airlines.

i booked a bangalore bangkok bangalore flight for rs 9000 with air india last week. Was the cheapest i could find. It seems from Calcutta Druk air (Bhutan) has cheap flights to bangkok. I also needed a return bangkok bangalore bangkok for my girlfriend but that was more than Rs 20000 if booked from within India.

Some interesting info:

Delhi blasts may affect US-India flight boom

Airline New Delhi, October 31: Airline carriers, which were all set to swoop and grab the booming tourist market between the US and India (520,000 US citizens visited India in 2004, knocking Britain off the top spot in the visitor charts) beginning November 2, may just hit a turbulent patch after last Saturday’s bomb blasts in the Capital.

Flying from Sydney to Kolkata, via Singapore Mar 06

We wanted a stopover in Singers or Bangers or even KL, prior to arriving in India. We found a few cheap fares from Sydney were direct flights i.e. Qantas or did not allow a stopover, if buying the ticket on the net as an e-ticket. Most did not fly into Kolkata. This did not suit us, so we costed the following and it came up cheaper than buying a return ticket for our dates, by $aud 153 each.

Syd/Sing on Gulf one way inc tax $A 503
Sing/Kolkata Jetstarasia one way inc tax $A 213
Bangalore/Colombo (stopover)BKK
on Sri Lankan Air one way inc tax $A 380
BKK/Syd on MAS inc tax $A 475

Total $A1571

Worth the time spent researching and gives us lots of flexibility.

Hey lyndy (or anyone else)

Does buying a one way ticket affect your visa application? I thought that you had to have a return ticket in order to be granted a visa??

You don't even need a ticket to get a visa!

You can have no ticket, a one way ticket or a return ticket - it makes no difference to your visa application.

I believe that Air India has one or two flights a week Bangalore to Dubai.

There are regular flights from Kochi to Dubai, and you can fly to Kochi from Bangalore on Jet Airways.
