Try this:

www.opodo.com

I've used them several times, and found them to offer some of the cheapest flights around. Hope you have as much success with them as I have had.

That's probably why I looked up a Russian and a Romanian airline for you.
Sorry I think we're not getting each other here.

Student travel agencies can usually get good deals even if you're not a student. Note that holders of the ISIC student cards may get a reduction, but more importantly often don't have to pay more for a ticket with a return that's more than 2 months after departure.
From Europe, I used Turkish airlines with a stopover in Istanbul to get to Delhi; one way it cost about 400 EUR incl taxes. In my case they arranged a good hotel plus airport transfers as the flights didn't connect - a free day in Istanbul, nice.

I was limited to travelling over the Xmas-New Year break (Dec 16 out, Jan 8 in) from Toronto, and still managed to get an Aeroflot to Delhi via Moscow for Cdn $1511 return (plus tax and agent fee). The only snag is the Russian transit visa, which costs $100 (i.e. almost twice what the 6-month India visa costs). Also means being stuck in the airport during a 10 hour layover, but Russia seems to have become a very tourist-unfriendly place anyway.

Since I have been shopping for myself and the wife, I think from North America the cheapest I have found right now are from Aerosvit. From their website fares are as low as 900USD from Jfk to Delhi during the week and makemytrip.com has the exact same fares from Aerosvit for around 780 USD not including taxes (1036 total).

For me, Canadian prices are to high and it's worth it to trek to Jfk or Newark. I ended picking a pair up for $2212 USD for both of us, a little higher since one day is on the weekend but not a bad deal.

Send a message via Yahoo to rikko
Brirish Airways and Jet Airways both have fares to Mumbai and Delhi for under £400 from Heathrow.

Do you really need a visa when you are just staying at the airport?

Ryanair flies from a lot of european airports to London. They are dirt cheap most of the time.

For an overview of budget airlines across the world (including within India, and within Europe to get to that airport you're flying to Delhi from):

Lotus - but there are connections by other budget airlines from 'nearby' places like Zagreb, Dubrovnik, Budapest which can cut costs a lot if you accept a few hours more travel.
