Do I need to buy a return ticket / onward flight to fly UK to India?

Anyone concerned about this should remember that in these days of e-tickets, itinerary printouts have become even more acceptable substitutes for paper tickets.

I have traveled to many countries, and my wife to India as well, as non-citizens. Whenever we were asked for "tickets" for any reason, the humble printout never failed us.

I suppose that one purpose of many pointless immigration and customs inquiries could be to watch our response, to see if it suggests that furthter inquiry is desirable.

......aaaargh this thread again?! It haunts me like my aborted malaria thread [don't worry, I have taken on tropical medicine at night school and will post again on that issue in eight years].

So, in summary:
1) Don't believe anyone that is selling you something
2) Provide the visa application information that you need to provide in your respective countries and not a skerick [how do you spell that?] more
3) Remember that the world we live in and the officials who live somewhere remotely from that world necessitate the need to be armed with convincing information
4) Be confident, fair but fair
5) Nothing is foolproof as nothing has been found to effectively neutralize all the world's fools.

ive been looking everywhere to find an answer to this, cause im going to india and really dont want an onward ticket. so i emailed the indian high commission of my country and asked, getting the reply:

Dear sir,

We do not need proof of funds, however you have to have return ticket if you are travelling on tourist visa.

Following are the visa requirements :

Visa requirements :

· Duly filled application form ( Download : http://hicomind.org.nz/formappl_indianvisa.pdf )

· NZ $ 90.00 bank cheque in the name of “High commission of India, wellington” for six months Tourist visa on NZ passport

· One photograph

· Original passport

· Self addressed courier envelope for return of your passport

Processing time will be 5-7 working days..

NOTE: our visas are valid form date of issue not from date of arrival in India and we do not issue post dated visas.

So i need a return ticket unfortunetly. Best to check with the authority in your country i guess.

No where on the application form does it say return ticket or proof of onward journey required.

This is for New Zeeland, maybe they are having the same requirement as Australia.

i dont want a return ticket, and i know it doesnt say you need one on the form, but if the high commission specifically states i have to have one then i dont think i have a choice. dont want to get turned away at the end of the day.

Did the local VFS ask for it ? They are the initial collector/forwarder of Tourist visa.
