Thanks! Splendid tip. I haven't had a long-haul flight since smokers became an endangered species, but I'd thought of it yes. I just survived a 6.5-hr. train ride so I guess when the going gets tough... the smoking get abstinent. (I was also lucky not to be left standing on my socks on some train platform with all my gear inside when the presumably halted train decided to instantly leave again I should add.)

Any experience with nicotine chewing gum?

God... I'm twitching at the thought of a smoker going 17 hours (plus the hours in no-smoking airport buildings) without a cigarette --- and I haven't smoked for 15 years! Sounds like a great opportunity to just give up ....

Is it possible to have a history of thrombosis or DVT? I thought these were things one was lucky to survive?

For me the flight to London is a mere ten hours. But I really don't like adding 50% or more to that with stops on the way. And, although I thoroughly enjoy the take-off and landing, my ears don't, and doing it twice in a day can leave with ear problems that take a day or two to pass.

Don't get me started. It's the non-flying hours that drive you mad more than anything. I just love these airports advertizing "no smoking except in designated areas" where there are none too. A little Pythonesque really, except I won't be in a mood to appreciate the humor.

Trying to get back on topic then, Aadil I appreciated your comments. I'm just wondering if some of the stuff mentioned above, half-jokingly or not, wouldn't suffice to aggravate a heart condition (for instance). Besides I didn't mention take off your shoes for nothing, I had a friend who would get seriously bloated feet on planes. Didn't really help as she could hardly get them back on afterwards though & it would take her several days to recover. If this sounds like I'm cracking a joke, this is directly related to the veins trouble you were hinting at I believe, just I lack the English to describe it. There are many sufferers apparently.

I'm not sure if 90 minutes total circling on an X-hour flight would turn out fatal, it's certainly something to take into account however.

So I guess if you have a serious condition a several-day stopover (more than a few hours anyway) would make sense. Might work out rather costly though.

Tsja...

Yes, some people do get bloated feet once they are up in the air and it is something that is not a joke, I did mention that it is a problem for people who board long haul flights. Many people may not even have a heart problem but could get things going against them with a lack of enough oxygen in the cabin and that too when it is for a long haul flight it gets worse so you can imagine what it is like being at a height of 8000 to 10,000 feet altitude which is what the pressure in the cabin is maintained at in most aircraft. Many people may get anxiety feelings which can cause problems in an otherwise healthy body too.

Good lord Amsterdam - Delhi was long enough for me. Further to what Aadil points out as a very real danger there are some exercises you can do to alleviate the problems of DVT etc. These are sometimes written down in the in flight magazine or safety brochure!

Yes... I found them about as entertaining as the safety brochures we all grew up with (miss those live stewardesses though! I don't know, those video screens just don't do it for me.)

Doesn't mean they're completely senseless though. Provided you land horizontally in the middle of an ocean in the latter case & have nobody with high heels going before you no doubt.
