Declare electronic items at Customs?

I plan to get a pair of car speakers from the US and will be traveling to Chennai(India) shortly. Is this something I need to declare at customs and I plan to have this in the carry on luggage? The value of this item is roughly Rs 2500. Is it ok to pass this through the X-ray machine since you have speakers inside, wouldn't it cause any damage?

Look forward to any experiences/suggestions from people out there.

Thank you

I don't believe the X-Ray would cause any damage to the speaker (more of a guess than authoritative). Laptop/cellphone and camera go thru them at US airport don't they?

I don't think there is a need to declare it (again more of a guess than authoritative) since I don't declare the laptop or my iPod given that they are valued $$$ more.

X-rays will not damage the car speakers. No need to declare they are very cheap.

I guess you are allowed imports upto Rs 25000 plus 1 laptop and 2 litres of liquor.
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I--
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference

I've been doing some more digging around this, the below link defines clearly the baggage rules for different types of passengers arriving in India.

Speakers won't be damaged by x-rays.

Regarding declaring electronics, I know that - years ago (and why I stopped doing this, I'll never know) - I used to regularly go to an office at my home airport in order to register the electronics (Walkman and so on) that I was taking out of the country. I would be given a document listing the electronics I had.

The purpose of this was to have some proof that I had not bought the electronics while on holiday, thereby avoiding paying duty.

I don't know if there is still a need to do this, or if there is an equivalent practice (also, davef22, I would imagine that you are going to leave your car speakers in India, so this won't be an issue regarding that equipment - but it might be an issue for other electronic products you might have). I'm going to post a separate question about this.
