checking airfares to India

this is an interesting website that will allow you to check airfares in advance. I plugged in chicago-chennai and came up with some really good fares, for example, in January 2007.

I have NO financial interest in this site! I am just posting this info for anyone searching for prices to India....http://www.farecompare.com/

Below is from their website:

"Why Farecompare?

FareCompare is a one of a kind airfare centric vacation and business travel planning site that promises consumers early access to the lowest published and discount air fares.

FareCompare is first and foremost an air fare technology company. Our low fare deal engine is powered by the raw fare and rule data which comes directly from each airline (not scraped from reservation sites). We subscribe and receive the same domestic and international fare and ticket information as the popular online shopping sites (Expedia, Travelocity, Orbitz …) and process it in a unique fashion that allows us to quickly scan for the cheapest deals and distribute this low price information several hours before it shows up on these sites.

Our technology allows us to provide a real-time, early access, air fare alert system that guarantees consumers first crack at the best prices. FareCompare concentrates on mining over 30 million domestic and international fares and rules from over 400 airlines and subsequently boiling this information down to provide a broad geographical and timeline view of fare prices for flexible travelers who search for low fares as well as a historical fare price and side-by-side comparison views to help those with limited travel flexibility.

We use a variety of new travel planning and visual technologies including maps and satellite imagery, flight information, historical graphs, low fare star rating, side-by-side airline comparisons and seat availability checks."

Just so ya'll know, Continental Airlines now has a nonstop daily flight from Newark NJ to Delhi for $868 roundtrip (if you get it far enough in advance) it's a good deal ;-)

Easy to get a cheap flight to NY and take a quick commuter train to Newark

Chennai/London?

Sorry. Either the departure or destination has to be in North America at this time.
So much for that

Icetea, that would be about the standard price, 24000+taxes for the direct BA Chennai/London return.

But I'm not desparate for a shopping trip yet

Booking flight from India

Nick ... or anyone else who knows

Do you know if its possible for a UK resident to book a return flight on BA say MAA/LON/MAA for an unaccompanied child in UK or does it have to be booked in India.

Alternatively, recommendation for a good travel agent in India would be great - can't book these online.

Every attractive fare that I could find on this website came back "no seats available". What good is that? After the 20th time trying any date or city that might make sense, I quit in disgust. Have any of you actually booked from this site?

I agree with bschne's assessment. providing fares that are not available makes the website pretty much useless -- especially when most of the fares fall into that categories. I have yet to find a website that shows lowest available fares across multiple airlines. Currently, one has to go to each airlines's website.
