I need to change my date of departure and I am flying Air India. I booked the ticket through MakeMyTrip.com which charges $350 for every change.

Can I contact the Air India directly and change the date? Is it any cheaper to do that?

I know who knows, NY, I am sure he will be along. My uneducated guess. They will know in a flash it was a discount ticket. Having said that once I arrived too late to clear security. The airline (NW) earned my undying gratitude by putting me on the next fight..

You have a booking class or farebasis ? The fare basis and booking class are critical to determining what rules apply. You have given us no clear information.

Try contacting AI. Do you have a Frequent Flyer number with AI ? $350 is rather very steep. I have seen USD 125-150 range per change, some very deeply discounted/non-refundable tickets have upto $250.

Do you know the flight number and/or Origin & Destination ?

$350 is insane. I had to extend my stay last Feb when my mom had to undergo heart bypass surgery. American Airlines charged me $150 for extending my stay. And here I thought that was steep!

Okay, I spoke to the customer service again and they said it will be $150+fare difference and $50+fare diff for an infant on lap.

I guess I have no choice but to pay up. Would it help if I contact AI directly instead of the travel agent?

I am flying from ORD to BLR and back!

The fare-difference issue only crops up when you have not even begun the flight, i.e first leg. Is that the case ? For random dates in October, a O'Hare - BLR shows StarAlliance airlines (United/Continental/) & One World (AA/9W/Kingfisher) beating AI on published fares. So, it become critical we know what fare basis and/or Booking Class Makemytrip used for your ticket, because all the rock bottom fares in AI must have sold out.

Here is load status of AI for a Saturday in September -

Quote:
F4 A2 P2 C4 D4 J4 Z2 R0 Y9 B9 M9 H9 K9 Q9 V9 W8 G0 L0 U0 T0 S0 E0 N0
Note all the el-cheapo FYIA tickets are sold out with 0 as class availability. There are 4 seats left in First and >=9 seats each in Economy walkup i.e Y.

Non discounted ticket gets you non-penalty change. Heavily discounted tickets such as SLUT have heavy penalties. To hedge against this, you should have brought no-fault trip insurance. Each Travel Agency sells this - so does MMT.

Here is for a weekend in September, Ai's G class ticket's Change rules with Fare basis code GLWPX6.

It'd only be a phone call, so I'd certainly do that, and see what they say. Can't hurt, right.

Good luck with it.

well sir 350$ is way too much money to pay for date change well i would suggest you to call air india they will charge some penalties and you will get your date change.well make my trip add there charges with the penalties. Thats y i prefer to book tickets with a travel agent cause there you will get your tickets first and than you will pay the money . and you can even bargain with them you will get a very good price must be 1000 to 2000 rs cheap ............................
