Australia to India - Cheap alternative

I refused to believe that it would cost me $1200 for a one way flight from Adelaide to Chennai so I did some of my own research and by breaking the trip down I can get it for $671!

Jetstar do some amazingly cheap flights to Singapore, and I managed to get one for $230 from Adelaide!! Then by looking on the bestflights.com website I found a flight from Singapore to Chennai for $441 with Indian Airlines (even cheaper if you dont mind going via Colombo). The flight from Singapore departs 2 hours after arrival so therefore connects nicely. This all INCLUDES taxes.....no shit.
If we do not fit into this world, perhaps we should try to make the world fit to live in....Nanushka

Trying to find cheap flights to India (arriving mid-Dec, departing mid-Jan) for friends. All travel agents quote AUD2100-2700.

What I found is to fly into Kuala Lumpur via AirAsia (departing Melbourne, return, including taxes): AUD1100.

Then, Air-India Express from KL to Chennai for AUD650 (return, including taxes). Malaysia Airlins and Jet Airlines offer similar prices.

Hope this helps.

Tiger Air (an offshoot from Singapore Airlines) is also good for cheap flights - I think currently it is only going in and out of Darwin, although someone mentioned it was going to go to other cities in Oz.
Every cloud has a silver lining!

Whoa....thanks for the hdz up on Tiger! I ended up going with them in the end for approx $480 Dwn-Chennai. They are going to some Australian cities but not much from Adelaide at the moment. I have a decent credit with Qantas that will pretty much cover my flight to Dwn. Awesome.

Tiger Air has a promo deal Singapore - Chennai return, on return leg if flying out in mid Jan. Checked for my friends 30mins ago.

Singapore - Chennai: approx $370Sin. Dollar fly in 23/12.
Chennai - Singapore: $5!!! Sin. Dollar, fly out 17/01/01.
If can get cheap to Singapore from Oz return with Qantas, may be a inexpensive flight

Tiger Air - Yes, I haven't used them as yet, but my friend who lives in Darwin does and this is how I knew about them. They are o.k. too.

I used Tiger Air from Chang Mai (Thailand) to Singapore. Very good and cheap. I paid 50 euros one way. Only 15kgs check in luggage though.
