Air India webfare dec 2008 Lon-Bom..exorbitant

Why is the Air India web fare for LON-BOM-LON so exorbitant. Its about 750 sterling per adult. Is this the result of the golbal fuel price rise or is it just too early to book for dec flights.

the price of fuel has increased costs for airlines dramatically. here in the US, American Airlines has cut back on many domestic flights and now charge to check in extra bags -- you are allowed one. I just flew United Airlines and was charged $25 for my second check-in.

with families traveling for summer vacations, checking in 5, 6, or 8 bags, that all adds up for the airlines.

Most of December is peak season. Fares are typically higher by 50-100% You may get better deals if you fly before the 10th and between 24th-31st. I am flying from LAX-BLR-LAX on Dec 24th for 650GBP (Its a 22 hour flt).

Just out of curiosity I tried using Opodo website to check the fare from London to Mumbai in December 5 to 24th and Air India comes up with £523.

Same flight from 12th to 29th December is £798!

That's right within my 50-100% increase range.. BTW, it is the outbound flight that determines the price. Apparently, after the 1st week of December there a huge increase in demand of tickets to India.

Thats fine by me. I wish to be in Bombay after 25th and back in UK by 7-8th Jan.

I think this shows how strong the bond is betweeen Indians and Air India. Most Indians will prefer an Indian carrier.

It's a small sample, admittedly, but I doubt if I could find a single Indian among my friends who would choose airline on that basis.

I suppose the question should be asked of Indians living abroad..

1) would you rather give your money to a foreign airline or to Air India when you travel back to India. I think most NRIs would rather give it to Air india

2) I suspect if the question is posed to indians travelling out of India (tourism, business etc) then the lure of a foreign airline and things foreign may influence their answer.

I think the latent patriotism of the first group will result in an answer favourable to airindia. Besides if they are travelling with family/relatives/parents, then the food, familiarity, customs and in flight entertainment would also play a big role in choice

I agree with Nick. Cost, timing, reputation, waiting period in case change of plane is needed, quality of service are the main factors.

I booked Turkish Air to Delhi through Southall travel. Their timetable changed so my flight became non-existant, my tickets worthless. Southall Travel failed to inform me which it is their duty to do.
By the time I found out the newly timetabled flights were booked up and they could not find me an alternative flight at the same price, so I was forced to cancel and rebook (this time directly with the airline), which cost me £100 more. Then I was asked to wait 6 weeks for my refund from Southall Travel which trading standards said was unacceptable.

So just watch that your carrier doesn't change the timetable, and hope nothing goes wrong!

NB Turkish Air are not a great carrier, inflight entertainment is poor. But you gets what you pays for I suppose.
