Birders in Karnatka
Found a good site for birders in Karnataka: http://karnatakabirds.googlepages.com/home
It also provides links to other birding sites in India on: http://karnatakabirds.googlepages.co...inginkarnataka http://karnatakabirds.googlepages.com/links And, for the really committed, checklists. By the way, some of India's birders are very actively including information and photographs of Indian birds on Wikipedia see: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_birds_of_India. http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Sp...tions/J.M.Garg The guys behind this are very serious birders and, the general consensus is that most information is correct. They are building a great resource! "We often ignore the beauty around us" |

Some other conversation groups are: All India: defendingwildindia@yahoogroups .com For Goa: wildgoa@yahoogroups.com, greengoa@yahoogroups For Bangalore: bgncore@yahoogroups.com, HasiruUsiru@yahoogroups.com For Mumbai: http://www.savebombaycommittee.org, prakruti@yahoogroups.com For Thane Mumbai: http://www.yuwarajgurjar.com and hopethane@yahoogroups.com There are plenty more. For almost every area in India there is either a Yahoo or Google Group. And if there is not, and you want to raise awareness, you can start a group in minutes. Every little helps! Some of these groups have achieved lots of improvement in their environment. |

Have you seen Butterfly India News (http://butterflyindianews.blogspot.co m)
It is also worth looking at Mr. Kunte's website, which has apparently the largest collection of Indian butterfly photos http://www.bio.utexas.edu/grad/krush...IndianButt.htm There are a couple of people in India who are trying to map the Indian butterfly migration. I used to take part in the counting when I was living in Bangalore which was one of the points on the migrating route. I am not sure what has happened with it because the last year we were there the number of butterflies was already considerably less. The easy answer would be pollution but whether that is indeed the reason I don't know. |

Thanks Birds - great links.
I'm trying to work out how I can use this to help me ID butterflies while travelling. I think I've seen the book and decided against it. I find field guides with illustrations rather than photos easier to use - not to take anything away from the great photos Mr Kunte has taken. Just fussy, I guess! |

I agree illustrations tend to be easier, I prefer those for birds too.
But if you would take a Blackberry or IPhone along on your trips you could access the websites with the photos. Will be lighter than a book too. |
