What Snake Is This?
Does anyone know what snake this is?
We encountered it on a mountain road in HP, on the way from Shimla to Sarahan. |

It's not a Python. It's a Russels Viper. Very nasty!

Thanks to all.
After looking at a lot of snake photos on line, including Capt. Suresh's, we think it pretty nearly certain that we met up with a Russell's viper. Glad we didn't try to pet the thing! |

Looks like a viper but it is not possible to identify a snake by looking at a photograph. Scientifically a snake can only be identified after doing a scale count.

It is indeed a Russels Viper, a deadly snake among India's Big Four. Its neurotoxin venom is highly fatal and can kill any full-grown human within minutes..,
Other snakes who complete the Big Four are - Indian Cobra, Common Krait and Saw-scaled Viper. Big Four snakes are responsible for most number of human deaths due to snake bites across Indian subcontinent...., |

Though a snake can only be identified after a scale count, this one surely looks like a Russel's Viper. Very dangerous snake and is venomous!
